I've certainly never said I expect Danny to make a blockbuster move to vault us back into contention within the next year or two.

Well, I apologize if I put words in your mouth specifically.

I don't think it's unreasonable to say that Celts fans in general have gotten very excited by the prospect of "FIREWORKS!" the last couple of summers.  Nor is it inaccurate to say that a good number of fans have justified the Celts' rebuilding strategy by invoking a faith in Danny's ability to recreate what he did back in 2007.

Personally I have seen numerous times people suggest that this rebuild cannot be allowed to last more than a few years and that there is a need for the Celtics to be back in contention within 4-5 years from the time KG and Pierce were traded.

I can only explain this using the reasoning I proposed in the original post.

I guess you are right that a number of fans expect "fireworks" every off-season, and end up disappointed when they don't happen.

Personally, I realize that it will take time.  Where I think we are in disagreement is with the notion that the rebuild requires being really bad for an extended period of time to have a chance at being successful.

I don't believe that to be true.

We got really lucky last time that a player as good as KG was on the block. But there are a lot of similarities. Yes it is unlikely that we, or anyone, goes from worst team to best team in 1 season for a long time. But the process is about the same. Last summer we had a good offer for Love, but not the best offer to get him. So, we improve and add assets. Try again. Eventually we will have the best package of assets for a star. Yes, winning will delay this but, we will have much of a team in place unlike 2007. Sure we had PP then, but we have a whole team now.

It won't look the same, but I bet it will be similar. We will get one guy and suddenly look like a good team then get another and be great. Just might not be in the same offseason.

Well I think you overstate the value green or Telfair had, the point is good.

The real curse of 07 was not taking Marc gasol so we could take Pruitt and baby

The 2009 Minnesota pick wouldn't have been a strong asset if Garnett was still on the team.  Probably mid-teens to low 20's.  The trade really was all about Al Jefferson.  The rest was mostly just throw in.

I don't really get your point here.

The T-Wolves were looking to trade Garnett.  That being the case, they could anticipate being mediocre to really, really bad in the following years (i.e. while they rebuilt).

So, getting back one of the 1st rounders that you owe to another team before heading into rebuilding sounds like kind of a big deal.
My point is they weren't really looking to trade Garnett.  He had never asked out, but when Boston came calling with Al Jefferson and Garnett was ok going there (post-Allen) is when the trade came together.  I don't think they move Garnett if not for Boston or some similar offer (whatever that might have been) elsewhere.  Al Jefferson was the key and you needed another Al Jefferson type player for Minnesota to trade him.  Those type of players aren't easy to come by.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner
