More like Summer 2003.

Rondo = Pierce
Smart = Banks
Young = Kedrick Brown
Oly = Jiri Welsch
Green = Ricky Davis
Bass = Mark Blount
Sully = Perk or Brandon hunter

Give it 4 more years we might have the pieces to make a big splash.

ugh. but, yeah.

I'm not disagreeing but I really hope Smart isn't Banks 2.0...I had such high hopes for Smart...very very high hopes. For some reason, I see him as a perennial all-star
I'd guess Smart will have a better career than Banks.  Banks was the #13 pick and came from a weak program, right?  It's just really easy to compare them right now, because Banks was hyped for the same reasons... and I specifically remember him showing up with the same level of "I got this" over confidence.   Hard to believe now, but at the time there was a large chunk of Celtic fans who thought Banks was the future.  Nasty defender... pitbull size (same as Smart), lightning quick...
Banks went to UNLV.  Smart went to Okie St.

Both guys were at school for 2 years, below are the career stats.  I will let you guess which one is Banks and which one is Smart

16.6 p, 5.9 r, 4.5 a, 2.9 s, 0.6 b, 3.0 t, 2.9 f - 48.8 2PT%, 29.5 3PT%, 41.3 tot FG%, 75.1 FT%
18.1 p, 3.3 r, 4.3 a, 2.5 s, 0.2 b, 3.6 t, 2.9 f - 55.1 2PT%, 33.0 3PT%, 49.5 tot FG%, 73.1 FT%
lol

Maybe it's unfair to Banks to compare Smart to him.  Banks once dropped 42 points in a summer league game, afterall.

I am not high on Oly by any stretch, but based on their performances up to this point seems like a really insulting comparison of Jiri to Oly. Coming into the season you mentioned Jiri had averaged 1.6 points in 6 minutes a game for the warriors. Oly's 8.6 points as a rookie and 46% fg shooting nearly equal or surpass welsch's career high. How we eventually got a first round pick for that bum was one of the greater rip offs we have pulled in a small trade.

I once heard a Celtic fan refer to Jiri Welsch as a 6'7 Larry Bird.  The young fella averaged 9.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.2 steals, 43%/38%/74% that season... I'm keeping the parallel even if the timing is slightly off.   I stand by it... this is more like 2003 than 2007.  Ainge having just blown up the team and starting his tedious rebuild.   And if we bring back Pierce in a couple years, maybe he can wear #3434 and miraclejohan can write a song about it.

Your friend sounds like he may drink a lot, or have some weird perceptions of reality for other reasons. I don't think anyone can take that as a serious comparison. For that matter, probably everyone on the left side of that column is a better player than the guy being compared to (with exception of rondo, and pierce). This is an overly negative and pessimistic  comparison. Even mentioning hunter is also laughable compared to Sully.

It was a message board poster...   WEre you around back then?  There were plenty of fans high on Jiri Welsch.   A lot of fans thought he was a future star... very similar to the reaction to Oly's summerleague game.

btw, a lot of fans thought Marcus Banks was a future star too.  Pretty much any young player who wears Celtic green is a "future star" in the eyes of some fans.

I too recall folks liking, Jiri.  We all have guys who we think will be good that don't measure up at times.   Mine will never be non Americans however, as I think we still produce the best basketball players.  Other countries are improving though.

The same is true of soccer regarding us.   If our best athletes like Michael Vick and LeBron played soccer it would be game over for the other countries.  Here, if your a top notch athlete you play football, baseball or basketball for money.  There are some exceptions in track and field.  In other countries it is soccer by a mile.

I reckon we are doing what Phoenix did last off season. At least on the acquisitions side. Who's to say this roster doesn't break out like their's did?
