Also, I distinctly remember being at games where Bird was in so much back pain he couldn't sit when out of the game. Back pain is about the worst pain there is besides a guy passing a huge kidney stone or a woman giving birth. Yeah, Larry played through it.

Back pain might hurt more, but cramps can mean your biggest muscles literally cannot contract properly.  When they're bad enough it's physically impossible to move around with any kind of force.  I don't like LeBron but major cramps aren't something you can just gut out.

Freudian slip?

Football players do it all the time.

Not denigrating Bird's performance or play at all -- but its telling that no one who follows or coverts sports with an iota of common sense is spouting that kind of self-aggrandizing nonsense. Bob Ryan is a joke, and I really hate the fact that he's one of the biggest faces in the Boston sports media.

This was about cramps and Bird vs James. Not about Ryan.

Wrong.  People walk them off sometimes.

I don't think many of you have been in truly hardcore environs like say a march in the desert with a backpack and carrying a weapon.   You can bet your rear you walk them off then!  You don't get to call time outs in combat or the military.

You do know that cramps have basically nothing to do with hydration or salt, right?

Dehydration: Sports and other vigorous activities can cause excessive fluid loss from perspiration. This kind of dehydration increases the likelihood of true cramps. These cramps are more likely to occur in warm weather and can be an early sign of heat stroke. Chronic volume depletion of body fluids from diuretics (medicine that promote urination) and poor fluid intake may act similarly to predispose to cramps, especially in older people. Sodium depletion has also been associated with cramps. Loss of sodium, the most abundant chemical constituent of body fluids outside the cell, is usually a function of dehydration

WebMD and my doctor friend disagree with you.

Funny because this is from WebMD.  3-4 lines down after title.  Dehydration is mentioned clearly as a cause of cramps.

My doctor friend, LOL,  that is like my dad is tougher than yours.  I can probably find one that disagrees with yours.  We actually got our canteens checked in the US Army sometimes to make sure we had clean water.  I think banannas help too.

Electrolytes in your body have to due with dehydration.     There are fatigue cramps as well that you get on marathons or 20+ mile marches but I doubt two hours of basketball from a professional game would get that.   They are different.  I would like to point out that  Bosh, Diaw, Ray Allen, Wade and Duncan all played more minutes.

My point is that my dear friend, an orthopedic surgeon, disagrees with the idea that dehydration does not cause cramps. I actually spoke to him on the subject while watching the game. WebMD reinforces that.

No need to get snarky over my source.
