I'm also someone who really, really wanted Dieng last year with our 16th pick. I think Atlanta totally blew it by letting Dieng slip past and taking Noguiera (who has been stashed in international ball all season). Dieng was the next big taken, all the way down at #21. Plumlee then went at #22!
But getting Olynyk at #13 was just fine.
Olynyk is in the top 5 among rookies in a ton of important categories and notably among big men, he's doing fantastic. He's the #2 rebounder among all rookies behind only Adams, whether you measure by per-36 or by TRB%. And he leads all rookie big men in both points-per-36 and assists-per-36. He's 4th among all rookies in points-per-36. He's even 6th among all rookies in BLK%.
If you like 'roll up' stats, Kelly is 5th in accrued Win Shares, 4th in WS/48 and 3rd in PER among all rookies.
I think that, no matter how you slice it, Olynyk looks easily in the top 5 among all rookies and a strong case can be made for being among the top 3 in overall performance.
I think I still would have been very happy to get Dieng. But I'm not at all disappointed in what we've gotten in Olynyk. That's great production for a #13 pick.
Aside: Phil Pressey is easily #1 in Assists per 36, only a hair behind MCW at #2 in AST% and is #1 in both Steals per 36 and STL%. If only his shooting had not taken so long to get going (his shooting in March and April has been at least 'pretty good'. Before that, it was atrocious for Oct - Feb.). Even with the bad overall shooting numbers, Pressey looks pretty good for an undrafted pickup. If his more recent shooting holds true, he looks even better.
