NBA considers adding 4-pt shot

I don't like it, why don't they consider adding defense(aka bringing physicality back).

they say defense doesn't attract viewers, scoring does. My guess is next they will add the use of a trampoline at the top of the key.

I actually still have this game (bought it used at my local video store when I was younger). It may possibly be the worst video game ever made...this after I just finished every part of one of the best video games ever made in Super Mario 3D World.

Why are so many down on this idea? I realize it sounds kind of silly when you first hear it.

But what would be the harm in implementing a 4 point shot in the D-League for a season and see how it plays out? Test it live with top talent and smart coaches just dont let it into the NBA unless it creates some really interesting end of game scenarios that are dramatically more dynamic and interesting and in turn would have to show evidence of being able to draw more fans to the stadium and to the TV before being considered.

But what's the harm in trying? No one cares about the official rules of the D-League. It's the NBA's test league essentially, just look at the new flop rule being implemented as an example.

But it is kind of a silly idea and I would still be interested in seeing it for a season at the D-league level before being vetoed as a bad idea which would most likely happen.

I'm down on the idea because it'd add more randomness to outcomes in the end of game and also incentives chucking a bad shot.

I really don't want to see players launching 30 footers because the expected point per shot has gone up beyond break even at a mere 25% (especially when you account for long rebounds)

widen the court.

eliminate defensive 3 seconds.

fix the lottery

fix the mid season buyout situation

It's probably too much of a explanation to get into here, but it just changed the game.  Instead of trying to work to get as high percentage of a shot as possible, teams now try really hard to get a shot they expect to miss at least 60% of the time.  There's a lot more to it but that's the basic idea.

I woundn't say the 3 pt shot hurt the game, but when they brought it in closer is what hurt. You put it with in range for the PF's and C's  so they started to jack them up.

When they brought it back out, players still shot them, and now there are hardly any back to the basket bigs in the game as a result.

In the 80's and 90's the three point line was used well, and the right players took them. Jordan rarely took 3's unless the team needed or he was feeling it. Now we have Sully, who yes can hit them, but would score more efficiently with the 18 footer like KG.

I don't blame the rules and make up of the game, I blame the highschool coach's and AAU coach's who didn't step up to teach the kids how to play right and with in them selves.

maybe they can also put a second basket ten feet above the regular basket and a basket in that one can be worth 10 points! that will be awesome wouldn't it!

Yeah the "considers" is a bit strong.  The guys being quoted were asked about it and basically said nothing more than that it had been suggested.  Doesn't mean a thing.

Rod Thorn and Kiki Vandeweghe were entertaining a line of questioning about out-of-the-box ideas and ESPN.com chose to make a story that doesn't exist.
