  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
I'm a bit with gpap on this one.  When there's a path to go deep (weak conference), anything can happen, so take it.  Don't screw the future, but take it.

Pau Gasol is on the block and is expiring.  Take this roster, and add Rondo and Gasol for the stretch.  IF it costs a pick and other expirings to have a shot this year, we should take it.

We have Green and Wallace to match up with the big SFs, and that's a pretty nice idea by Danny (taking Wallace doesn't seem so bad in a series against NYK or MIA).  Gasol is a really, really good big man that can run the high post as well as anyone since, perhaps, Divac.

Do we have a shot with Gasol?  I think we have a puncher's chance...easily favored in the first round, and with the pieces to go the distance against the big guns in a series worth watching.

If it were 2009-2010 Gasol then yeah I'd say go ahead.
It's not though, he's a shell of his former self and giving up a pick so we can get killed by Miami in the first round or Indiana in the second round just isn't worth it to me.
I can understand why you'd want to take that route, just not something I'd waste a pick on. It's championship or bust and we gave up Pierce and KG for those picks.
We'd also lose our lottery pick this year which makes it even harder to get over.
Not for me but each to their own.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

I think the Cs are following Danny's master plan. He traded for the picks, and is trying to maximize our non-longterm players' value, while developing the young kids. Tank-showcase-develop season.

There's still a lot to happen, Rondo will come back, trades will be made... Bass, Lee, Hump and maybe Bogans will probably be moved, weakening our roster, but a Rondo/Bradley/Green/Sully/Olynyk lineup may be good enough to play .500 ball over the last 20 games of the Regular Season.

The Celtics are on pace for 30-32 wins, probably a bottom-10 record and maybe a top-10 or (please...) a high lottery pick if we're lucky.

The only players that I expected to play better are Wallace and Green, and maybe Olynyk although he's a rookie and he'll get it together.

Fav, Crawford, Hump and Sully are playing great, and Bradley looks like he's making the most out of his first training camp. Brooks, Bogans and Pressey weren't supposed to give a lot to the team, anyway. Bass and Lee are what we expected last season.

It's been a great season so far, Coach Stevens and his crew are very good, and the rebuilding could be faster than anticipated if trades this and especially NEXT season work fine for us.

Go Celtics!

Put a fork in it.  This year is done.

Yeah, I get it. It's worth a shot, though.

Just for the heck of it, I give them the Clips pick (division/building rival) so they can see the player they gave up for Doc Freakin' Rivers 4 times/year, plus in the papers on a regular basis.

While Gasol has surely diminished, as a rental and S&T asset, it's pretty low risk situation.  As a passing, multi-skilled 7 footer, I'd like to see KO play with him for a few months and learn the high post.

IT would help the development of the team, IMO, to end the season with a couple of playoff series with everyone in their proper positions and Rondo and Gasol organizing things.

That's the thing, I don't believe that there's actually this obvious path to turning this team into a legitimate middle-seed with a chance to go deep without "screwing the future."

In any case, you know what kind of GMs mortgage the future so that their young team can become middle-of-the-road in the present?  Bad ones.

According to my calculations there are about fifty games left on this season.

Not to mention, I've always been of the belief that anything can happen once you make it to the playoffs.

One Lebron ankle turn, one Roy Hibbert knee sprain, and suddenly Miami or Indiana is beatable.

I just think all this talk of "accumulating chips" and "developing players" is a crap shoot.

It has just as much a chance of failing as it does working.

The Celts upcoming draft picks could end up being total busts. Olynyk, Sully, Pressey and any other young players you are trying to "develop" could regress instead of progress ( I feel Sullly is the real deal but you get the idea.)

One of the more common arguments I hear is the fear of "not becoming the Detroit Pistons of 2019/10 that tied up alot of money in mediocre free agents." Well, my response is you could also become the Charlotte Bobcats and constantly be in the lottery every year with nothing to show for it.

We have Danny drafting not Michael Jordan.

What do you propose we do nothing?

It's one thing to gripe but I am not seeing a solution in your comments just criticism.   All sports involve luck and it could go either way that is life in general.

Tanking is a crap shoot but so would the playoffs.   We got McHale and Pierce tanking.   I can name guys who we got during playoff runs like Sam Vincent and Big Baby Davis and they are not very good at all.

My comments and "solutions" couldn't be any clearer.

Danny Ainge should set the team up to succeed, not fail just to get a good draft pick.

I'd say that sums it up pretty well.

yeah I think our lack of talent is finally showing up...and I'm pretty happy with it. after this 5 game road stretch we could be 13-25 and looking at a top 5 pick.

and likely ainge is going to unload some pieces at the trade deadline.

The nba is a star driven league. You need stars to compete..and unless you are an LA or Miami most stars are gotten through a high draft pick. whether thats involving it in a trade or drafting a star.

if we can get someone like parker etc. paired with Rondo/sullinger we could be set for the next few years.

It's ALWAYS fun to watch the Celtics play, because they go out every night to win and play their hearts out.

It's always been that way and always will be that way, and that's what Celtic Pride and this dynasty is all about.

I've been through many worse years than this, and it's not about to get me down or have me "ending" the season in early January ... ever.

They'll be back on top soon enough, and until then we'll cheer them on and watch as these players develop and the team goes through the necessary changes.

Sorry, I understand the point of the thread, I just don't agree with viewing this team or this game in that fashion.

If you're a sports fan of ANY kind and expecting whoever you root for to be on top or winning all the time, you're in for a heap of disappointment.

Your season may be just about over, but mine isn't, and the Celtics' isn't ... not until that last game whistle blows in early summer.

Just my opinion ... I'm not attacking anyone here, just vehemently disagreeing with the attitude and perspective of this post and the other similar ones now popping up.

If green isn't your color this time of year, there's always figure skating! ;)
