Doc didn't want to rebuild.  So what exactly is the theory here? Doc signed a long term contract and then thought he would ride these guys till they were 40?  Was that Doc's plan?  Where was this team headed with Doc at the helm with these players? Better days? Brighter days ahead?

Either .....Doc wanted to coach these guys but had no desire to be a championship level team

or...Doc intended all along to sign a long term contract and not play it out

or.....Doc is incredibly stupid as to the realities on NBA basketball.

I'm going to just about eliminate #3.

Seeing as how he got himself to the Clippers and is now coaching CP3 and Blake I'm going to eliminate #1.  So where does this leave us folks?  Doc is more than a quitter. A quitter says "I'm tired. I quit" and goes home.  Doc isn't quitting. Not by a long shot.  He just clearly signed a long term contract and had nooooooo intention of being here for it.  That's a lying fraud folks.

Also if you look at the timing Doc was leaking (and by leak we mean Niagara Falls folks) that he wanted out of Boston waaaayyyyy before KG and Pierce were gone. If he didn't want to "rebuild" he could have stayed here. He could have easily leaked it the other way around. It could have been "Doc really wants KG and Pierce here. He really thinks they have a chance. He really wants to attract that special free agent and thinks they can win a ring".....folks it wasn't like that.

The quitting was planned waaaayyy ahead of time. Which is why it's not really quitting at all.

My first thoughts are, 'is illogic a word?'. My spellcheck says it is, but my head check says no.

But he said he wanted to leave before they broke it up.  He could have signed a one or two year contract. He didn't

Doc loved this team? That's why he leaked to SAS that he wanted to go to the Clippers?

Yeah illogical is obviously a word, I just don't think I've ever seen 'illogic'.

'Your illogic is baffling'. I've just never seen it like that.

As far as Doc never wanting to see a rebuild, I think he was really wishy washy on it. He saw what happened to Rays Boston credentials when he booked in the changing times. I think 100% his master plan was to ride out as much of his contract as he could, then go back to the booth for a while, and after an appropriate amount of time, coach another team, or even come back to Boston.

And then this opening came about, and..then he got to thinking. Then it fell through, and he got to thinking again, then he decided he just didn't want to go through a rebuild, and the deal got done.

He signed the longer contract to convince free agents that he was serious about the team. Perhaps he also though we could compete last year and this with a healthy Rondo. The injury squashed that idea.

Regarding illogic-illogical: just because their is a word illogical does not mean that there is a word illogic. When people use that reasoning to conclude a non-word is a word, that is called back-formation.

Merriam-Webster seems to indicate that illogic is a case of back-formation. Back when it first came to be used, it wasn't a real word. By now, it might be due to use over the years.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
He decided he'd had enough.
When he signed the contract who knows he wasn't intending to stay. Instead he changed his mind after 5 years. He realized that this team couldn't contend as built which is true and couldn't get any support unless they traded Pierce away. It was either Doc or Pierce going essentially.

Don't see what the big deal is.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."
