did you see the interview with Pierce and KG sitting together ? very tough to watch - reminded me of what Larry said in his interview with Simmons about how he always appreciated Red's loyalty - how Red knew McHale had sacrificed his career in the '87 finals playing on a broken foot and would never trade him. i've always considered loyalty to be part of what made the Celtics a special franchise.

And yes, I understand that in pure basketball terms, Ainge made a smart move - maybe. but just like the Perk deal (which was a dumb move), the game ain't played on paper and I don't want the Celts becoming just another franchise - but Danny has made them just that.

Pierce talked about how it hurt to see teams like the Mavs say they would never trade Dirk, Spurs would never trade Duncan, Lakers and Kobe. But he had to live with constant trade rumors despite being the equal of all those guys.

KG said he felt like the whole deal had kinda been forced upon them and that they wouldn't have the ending to their careers in Celtic Green that they had wanted.

Pierce and KG are Celtics. KG always was - he just didn't find out until he got here.

Still makes me think about that 4th quarter in 2010.

The whole thing breaks my heart.

A must read!  Thank you for saying it so well>

I disagree with it on a number of fronts.

The perk trade wasn't a dumb move.  Saying the Perk trade was a dumb movie is like saying "Joe Johnson for Rodney Rogers" was a smart move.

Pierce was never an equal to Duncan or Kobe.  Pierce was never a superstar.  At most he was a top 15 player in his prime.  I love the guy.  I named my cat after him.  But he wasn't a transcendent player.  We won a title after trading for a superstar named Kevin Garnett.

Ainge made a wise decision here.  We'll be terrible in the short-term, but long-term we'll be in a much better position.  If Pierce loves boston, he's welcome to come back next season for the vet minimum.  Anytime you can get 3 1st round picks for a guy who is likely retiring with in the next year or so, you probably should do it.

I was and still am totally against blowing it up. I was all for reloading, but once Doc left I knew Pierce was going to be moved and KG probably wasn't far behind (either Clippers or retirement).

But what Ainge did was a best-case scenario given what was undoubtedly going to happen. He could have moved Pierce anywhere, even a non-contender, and KG could have called it a day. We could have seen Pierce rotting miserably on a bad team as his career winds down, and possibly KG's last game ever.

Now, even though the wound is still fresh for both us fans and the two players (side note: how ecstatic did Terry look? Lol... Smiling ear to ear the entire presser. I think he was extremely uncomfortable last year, for whatever the reason may be). But time heals all wounds. Paul and Kevin will be just fine when they start racking up wins and become the contender I expect them to be. Deron is one of the nastiest one-on-one players in the league and with those 4 shooters around him, he will have a lot of single man coverage. If they double, Kidd will teach him how to find his mates. They have size and depth. Half court offense and defense (AK47-Evans-KG front court? :o). They have all the tools to dethrone Miami and any team that makes it to the Finals out west.

As for us Celtics fans, it may take longer to accept. Some on here seemingly did already, and good for them if they are being truthful to themselves. But like many on here - myself included - it will certainly take time. Will we need the closure of them returning that first game as visitors? Selfishly, as a person born and raised in Brooklyn, I will get to follow them even easier than I do the Celtics. So I will definitely be rooting for them to go all the way. I have accepted we are not going far this year (yes, I am pro-tanking, but that's for another thread), and I have no problem admitting I will be rooting hard for another team for the first time since becoming a Celtics fan back in 2002. But that first game that they return will be very difficult for any Celtics fan.

And I totally understand where Paul is coming from. He did as much for the Celtics as Dirk did for the Mavericks or even Kobe did for the Lakers (Lakers are rarely bad, and probably would have won multiple championships with Shaq and any other good SG anyway. The Celtics were completely irrelevant throughout the 90's prior to Pierce's arrival). Ainge was hellbent on sticking to his words that he would not make the mistake (which I disagree with) that Red made with the original Big Three. It is what it is.

We won the title after trading for Garnett, who is absolutely a superstar of the highest order.  But to say Pierce wasn't transcendent is false.

Going toe-to-toe with LeBron in a game 7 (whom the year prior was in the Finals) and coming out on top with 40+ pts is transcendent.  Winning the NBA Finals MVP is transcendent.  More gaming winning shots than I can remember is transcendent.

On Kobe and Duncan's level, no.  Worthy of retiring as a Celtic, yes.

sigh, Pierce is my favorite player and watching the press conference really takes the air out of you. feelings aside, i do think this was the best move for all parties involved, except for the former Nets players.

I wish KG and Pierce the best. I'll be rooting for them once the playoffs roll around. Just thinking about it, i'd be ecstatic if i were a Nets fan. Not only did they get top-tier talent, but they're bringing in the winning and intense culture of KG.
