Agreed. We could certainly get a very good player in return for Rondo. Wouldn't surprise me if we could get Dwight Howard or DMC pretty much straight up for him.
Rondo may not be an elite scorer, but he's arguably thessecond best PG in the league after Chris Paul, and good enough to instantly turn a decent Team into a phenomenal one. Teams know this, and they also know that elite pass-first point guards in the mould of Stockton/Kidd are incredibly rare.
Trading him for an expiring contract, is pretty ridiculous unless he return from injury, half the player he was. I don't think that will happen.
As for Smith.. I agree that you wouldn't trade Green for Smith. The whole appeal of Smith is combining him with Rondo and Green. I would prefer to play Smith at PF where you can make use of his rebound, his shot blocking and his ability to pass out of the post (as well as the quickness mismatch up front).
Play him at SF and you are encouraging him to jack up jumpers, which is not his greatest strength.
The way I see it Rondo and Smith are two of the best passing players at their positions, and they are both very good rebounders who run the floor extremely well. I think they actually complement each other incredibly well...surround then with guys who can shoot (Jeff Green, Kelly Olynyk) and I think you have a very nicely balanced lineup.
People complain that josh smith isn't a go-to scorer but then we don't really need him to be.We j just need him to be a capable scorer who can put points on the board and impacts the game in a lot of other ways.. which he does.
