He could, but the last time we had a coach who was also the gm, he failed miserably at both jobs.
I'd rather just take a flyer on a young guy like Brian Shaw. If he works out, great, if he doesn't no problem since we aren't going to be very good anyway.
Danny's proven himself to be considerably better at both jobs than that miserable failure.
well before Ricky P. got to Boston, he actually had a pretty good track record as a coach in the NBA (90-74 in the regular season and 6-7 in the playoffs). I have no idea what his stint in Boston would have been like if he wasn't also the GM. It is incredibly difficult to do both jobs, let alone both jobs well.
My memory of Pitino in NY was that the team was really tuning him out, and that's why he was dumped in spite of his record.
I don't have any memory of how he left, but he had a pretty good record and was moving in the right direction (50 win regular season and 2nd round of the playoffs). He also took the Kentucky job, which even then was one of the best jobs in the world for a basketball coach.
