FWIW - here's a draft retrospect on Marc Gasol. Pretty interesting read: Tough to distinguish what you know, from what is said but it certainly seems like it was foolish, even then, for so many teams to have passed on him.

Part of the issue was he was playing a lot heavier than he does now, even as a professional.

How many big men never cut the weight they need to to reach their potential?

Like, all of them?

Yeah, that's what I thought too. Then Perkins lost probably 100 lbs after the C's drafted him and Gasol went from being "Pau has a brother?" to "holy crap he lost so much weight he looks like his brother!" to "holy crap he's good".

I think Big Al also did a pretty good job of re-shaping his body, although clearly not to the level Perk did.

This might be nitpicking, but from the above article this is just absolutely untrue

Well if we're just going by hindsight, it would seem that drafting Giddens at #30 with the following centers still available (Pek at #31, DeAndre at #35, Asik at #36) was a pretty big blunder. Pekovic especially would look great in a C's uniform. Drafting Green in 05 with David Lee still available is pretty disappointing as well...but again, it's easy to pick out which players would be useful to us with the knowledge we already have, so I don't fault Ainge too much for these moves.

Other than that, I think his worst move was never getting  a true back up for Rondo, instead relying on various point guards by committee - Marbury, Nate, House, Arroyo, West, Bradley, ect. It obviously wasn't very important in the playoffs where he played close to 40 minutes a night, but I do believe it led to the team relying on Rondo too much in the regular season. He also struck out pretty bad when it came to acquiring a legit big to back up KG, but at least he tried (Big Baby, Sheed, Shaq, JO, Erden, Krstic, Stiemsma, Wilcox, Darko...)

Resigning Mark Blount to that MLE contract for 5 years was a disaster that set this team back two years.

Reading that confirms my belief that some people weigh athleticism a bit too much when deciding which young players they want to invest in.  If the Celtics draft a center, I think I'd be happier with a guy projected to be a poor man's Marc Gasol rather than the next Deandre Jordan.

Yeah, in general I'd lean toward intelligent, strong work ethic and fundamentally sound as opposed to athletic with a low basketball IQ.  There obviously needs to be some minimum level of athleticism, but otherwise, give me guys in the former group.

(By the way, I'm confused by whoever said that Marc Gasol was regarded as soft.  Everything I've ever seen suggests that the guy was a bull, and never shied away from contact.)

I have always liked Marc Gasol, and I also wanted the Celts to draft Noah.  I have even said that Marc is the better of the Gasol brothers

That would be me. You are right, I might have chosen the wrong word to describe his apparent lack of work ethic, when he was an overweight youth player.
