  • Rondo = Good
As others have said, Rudy's not the guy.  If we make a major trade it has to be for a franchise level player who can keep us relevant moving forward.

Otherwise, wait until KG and Ray retire and then start making trades to get us good draft picks and prospects.

Yeah this is a great idea. Lets load up on all star level swing forwards and forget anything else we need to fix.

Agreed.

Even against Wade and LeBron, it was our lack of production from our bigs and our bench that did us in. No team is going to win the perimeter battle against them over a 7-game series.

We needed a PG to set up the offense (which we have, but was injured) and a big who can rebound and score inside (which we had in Shaq, but he seems done).

I'd like to add someone like Chandler over another wing.

With Pierce, Ray, Green and West, our perimeter is hardly a weakness.

To play devil's advocate, I agree with you on the condition that the season starts in two months, and that is as far as we care.

In a year, or a year and a half, we'll be praying for a 'Rudy Gay' caliber swingman if we do nothing.

Agree, bigs are a 'big' concern. They ought to be the biggest focus in the offseason. But, if we could trade for Rudy Gay at a price that was amicable (I'd trade Pierce and the pick for Rudy if I were a cold hearted psychopath, but Pierce retires in green. Ray though...), I think it is worth definite consideration. The Celtics aren't going to just cease to exist when the big 3 retires, and I for one will only have the patience for a year or two of 'troubled times'.

If we swapped Pierce for Gay, we wouldn't be loading up...just getting younger and more athletic

I'd much rather move Pierce than Ray because it gets his contract off the books and keeps the 2012 cap space.

A duo of Rajon Rondo + Rudy Gay would be very enticing for top free agents (like Dwight Howard).

I agree that would be an attractive free agent destination, but what would Memphis' incentive be?  They'd be trading Gay to free up money to sign Marc Gasol (and probably retain Shane Battier - I'm sure Chris Wallace doesn't want to lose him like he lost Rodney Rogers).  Pierce makes just as much as Gay for the next two years.

Besides, Pierce is better than Gay right now.  About as good defensively when he's locked in, much more versatile and efficient offensively.

I do like Gay as a Ray-placement though and Rondo fit.  His athleticism and finishing ability would be maximized playing with Rondo while his playmaking deficiencies would be masked.

Ray and Jeff Green for Gay is a good deal, I think.  Memphis gets a very useful 1 year rental of Ray and a poor man's Gay in Green.

The Celtics supersize the perimeter with Pierce and Gay, and delay their free agency adventure for a year.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Grizz owner came out and said they are not moving Gay.
Sounds like Gay has more of a chance staying than Marc Gasol though.

Grizz owner says they would've beaten the Thunder if they had Rudy Gay.

Only guys that might leave Memphis are OJ Mayo and perhaps Gasol if the owner doenst wanna match offers for his Restricted free agency.

I wonder if Cleveland will make a move pre-draft for someone like Gay.  They have that massive trade exception from Lebron, which is still in effect and two top four picks.  I don't think they give up both picks, but would #4, Erden, and the exception be enough to get Gay.

The Cavs could then take Irving at #1 and would be on their way to a nice young core (Gay, Irving, Hickson, Varejao,

It would be tough to trade Pierce, but I have to agree.  I'd also try to unload Jeff Green in a seperate deal because a Green/Gay combo is redundant and soft.
