Angryguy. I see what you're saying but at some point you have to draw a line.  Otherwise you might as well have the most popular people on TV going around just saying stuff every time they get upset like "You fudging fat ugly fa@@oty ni@@er beotch!" and it's ok.

I don't want my kid talking like that under just about any circumstances even if I have in my life.  I'm extremely happy there was no video camera around when I did.

Plus it's not like Kobe is some inner city uneducated guy that is going back to his cultural roots speaking this way.  The guy speaks fluent Italian. He can express himself just fine.  He has no excuse if you understand what I'm saying.

I do get what you're saying. But as I was saying yesterday, why does that certain group get the line drawn after them? I don't want my son going around saying GD and the like no more than I or you would want them going around saying what you mentioned. Many Christians are offended by taking the Gods name in vain, but if they complained they would get laughed at and told to sit down.
There is also a difference between racial slurs and what Kobe said imo.

What I see is a different set of rules for different groups of people.

The difference is that almost unanimously that group finds the word extremely offensive if said. And Kobe used the word because of its offensive nature to describe a person in the most offensive way he knew how.

who cares.  I mean really.

+1

Gives people the chance to pull out media-created 2 cent meaningless politically correct terms and words.

The messiah can say anything to officials he wants at any time without accountability.  Can do anything he wants.  The double standard is startling.

The fine is absurd.  Doesn't matter how much money the guy makes.....Or whether you like him or hate him.

I can't wait to see what Stern puts on the next set of uniforms to pander to this "offended" group.   Any guesses?

He made disparaging comments about an official. Stephen Jackson got a 50 k fine and a game suspension after cameras followed him to the locker room and caught him mouthing disaparaging comments about an official after he had been ejected.

Each teams jersey will have to have every color of the rainbow represented.

I hate Kobe and all, but this is not a big deal. OK, he got caught on camera saying it, so fine him.

I'm sure KG throws worse around dozens of time per game. The baseline (especially immediately after exiting from gameplay) is still the game.

I'm guilty of using insensitive language (when I am around friends). Does that make me a bad person? I'd like to think not, but I am not a superstar athlete, nor am I a role model. Granted I don't use that type of language at my workplace, but I'm not nearly as passionate about my job as an elite NBA player.

What I see is a different set of rules for different groups of people.
Because taking God's name in vain is between you and God. You can't own God. You're breaking God's rule and if He decides to fine you or punish you that's between you and Him. But it's not hate speech towards an entire group of people.

If he had sworn at the ref and said "You're a fudging Christian!" people would have been probably confused because "Christians" rarely get attacked in the same way as gays. People rarely use the word "Christian" as an overall bigoted term where it just sums up an entire mind set or group like the n word or the f word.  People don't look at your clothes and say "That's so Christian" because there's a color they don't like in it or because you said something they disagree with.  If you do something someone doesn't like nobody says "What are you? A Christian?"

Now if Kobe had said "You think you're almighty like a fudging Bible thumping fundy Christian!" I would think he would have been fined. That's hate speech
