It's all going towards the super classico of tennis and it will be extra interesting this time.

It would be crazy to see Fed and Nadal complete their own career-slam of Finals against each other.  This surface has always been Fed's and the one place that Rafa couldn't touch him.  I still have trouble believing Rafa could beat him here, but the potential of such a match would be bananas.

TBH I'm on the fence about them meeting in the finals. I think Rafa should get by Nando but Youzhny/Wawrinka could be tough. If Rafa makes the final I'm not sure I want Fed there. His problems with Rafa go way beyond surface. If Rafa beats him convincingly here then what? Rafa is just so relentless, it seems inevitable he'll win the USO one day. I just don't want it to be against Fed.

I'm almost the exact opposite (and I think we could easily context that you tend to pull for Fed while I tend to pull for Rafa).  I don't particularly want Fed to win this year's Open, and would be fine with Nole taking him out.  The only reason I'd want him in the Finals is because of the potential of seeing them finally go heads up at the USO.

The Fed's surface of choice vs Rafa's seeming advantage H2H against Fed would be extremely interesting.  And it has potential GOAT implications as well, because with the career slam and the record number of titles it's hard for us Sampras fans to argue against Fed.  But if, somehow, Rafa were to complete his career Slam against FED, on his final surface of refuge, and run his career record against him even more lopsided...it becomes harder to argue Fed as the GOAT if he can't beat the best of his own time.

Either way, it'd be by-far the most interesting combo no matter what the outcome.

Oh no. I'm definitely pro-Rafa whenever they play. Rafa is my #1. Fed is somewhere in my top 10.

You're a Sampras fan? I love him. Watching him on grass was just sublime. Fed has a couple more slams but it's like the whole MJ and Kobe debate. Sometimes the #s don't tell the story. IMO Fed can't be the GOAT. Unfortunately, Rafa's presence has raised enough question marks to make sure of that. If Rafa (and to a lesser extent Del Potro) hadn't gotten injured Fed could even still be tied with Sampras.

For that argument it doesn't matter really matter if Fed never plays Rafa at USO. He's already lost to him in a HC slam. This distinguishing slow from fast is just semantics. He's only beat Rafa at Wimby and lost to him in 3 other slams. If they play and Fed wins it doesn't change that much. Just confirms what the prevailing thought is that Fed is better on fast hards than Rafa. But if he loses then that's really tarnishes his legacy. At this moment he's the best player of his generation and if he loses to Rafa history will be re-written very quickly.

Mixed doubles is on now.  That was by far my favorite to play, although I liked doubles too.  It was a source of pride to try not to be a weak link on the court.

You missed a great match right before. Women's doubles semi-finals. Vania King is doing great in doubles. She won Wimby and is now in the USO finals

I agree with you, especially the part about how Rafas and Del Potro's injuries opened a late door for Fed.  On the one hand you could say Fed earned it anyway by being so metronomically consistent and healthy, always putting himself in position to take advantage of any slippage from his peers.  On the other hand...it was just kind of an empty way to do it.  It's similar to how the '09 Lakers broke through for a title by beating the Magic while KG was hurt...yeah, props to the champ, but it tarnishes it.

I guess, ultimately, that's part of why I like the idea of a Fed/Nadal final.  Well first, I like it just because it's the most interesting.  But second, if Fed's going to win another then I want him to go through his nemesis to do it.  Also, on the other hand, if Rafa is going to win his first US Open crown it'd be more fitting for him to do it by going through Fed.

That's really the crux of the matter for me. When was the last time Fed beat Rafa in a slam? 2007. 0-3 since. Rafa has earned a slam on each surface the hard way by beating the other top player on the tour on his best surface. Fed can't say the same. It's tough to compare consistently winning slams against Agassi to beating up on mental midgets like the 2 Andys.

In terms of the final, I'll be happy with either Fed or Djoko if Rafa is there. Rafa and Fed obviously have the incredible rivalry. I think in terms of match quality Rafa/Djoko are capable of producing a great match if it's not too hot outside. Rafa is obviously making a march into history this season and I'll be ecstatic if he wins USO but I don't want it to be at the expense of Fed's legacy if that makes sense.

I was hoping for a Venus/Vera final but of course Venus lets another match slip away. Sigh. I'll be rooting for Vera tonight. Clijsters has been erratic in the games I've seen. Vera just needs to stay steady to capitalize and win.

Rafa cruised to his first USO final. I'm so happy for him.

I can't believe Djoko won. Must be get the Federer monkey off your back year. Hewitt, Soderling, Berdych, Baghdatis. Who hasn't broken a long losing streak against him since AO? Sigh.
Oh well I can root for Rafa with undivided attention tomorrow.

:( sorry Misha. Let's hope third time is the charm in Melbourne.

Finally the men's final is here. A bit apprehensive since Djoko plays Rafa much tougher than Fed. I want to watch the whole match but I don't how many Rafiel Nahdolls I can take from Enberg before I bail.
