For Daniels, I'm honestly not that worried about it.  He'll be here; Danny and Scal, among others, have already talked about him as if he's a member of the team.

I agree with you that Daniels will be here, but seems uncharacteristic for Ainge to talk about Daniels like that prior to an actual signing and I don't recall those type of quotes from Ainge.  Do you have links?

Quote from: Boston Globe
We like Gabe but he was not going to get a chance to play much with Marquis (Daniels) coming in," Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said. "He has a bright future and this will give him a chance to play elsewhere."

Link.

Brian Scalabrine was on the same page as Celtics management with free agents. And Scalabrine believes the acquisitions of Rasheed Wallace and Marquis Daniels will make the Celtics the favorites to regain the championship.

“I’m loving Rasheed Wallace,’’ Scalabrine said last week at a State House presentation for the team’s Heroes Among Us program. “And Marquis Daniels gives us versatility. Those two things, I think, make us the best team in the league.

Thanks.  The fact that Ainge said that on record seals it for me.  I guess anything is possible if nothing is officially signed, but Ainge is not going out on that limb publically unless he's sure this gets done one way or another.

Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

Yeah, between Ainge's statements, and Daniel's barely readable twitter (yes, I am convinced it is his, after doing some research on his "music career", as well as his tweets with Shaq), I am 100% convinced Daniels will be here.

I really think Danny just feels no rush.  As Jeff's article on the front page says, it's now the OFFseason.  Ainge has been on vacation over the last week or two, and with Daniels tied up, the heavy lifting of the offseason is over.  Now he is just holding out for an opportunity to open up extra roster spots, and get Daniels more money/years with a sign and trade...but there is absolutely no rush (as frustrating as it is for us fans).  At this point, I would be surprised if Daniels signs the BAE before the end of August.  I think Danny will string it along as long as possible, just hoping someone will bite on a sign and trade.  Partially because there is no reason not to, and also to show Daniels he is doing everything he can to get him the extra cash.

Danny can still sign vet minimum guys while this is going on...and honestly, I have a feeling that is all he plans on signing for the rest of the offseason anyways...or at least until the Davis situation is wrapped up.  I think Danny prefers to go into the season with the BAE intact, so he can compete with, or outbid the other contenders in the case of buyouts at midseason (which there will likely be a lot of).

I think a phone call from Baby & Co. might get Danny off the golf course if anything would at this point.  Well, he'd at least let someone play through.   ;)

I am sure Danny has learned to put with his bluetooth in.

He probably has a golf cart with GPS to include Baby's whereabouts at all times.

And it starts beeping anytime he comes within 100 feet of a Burger King or KFC.

Roy, maybe you can help with this.  Is this situation actually different, legally than the Turkoglu situation.  Turkoglu supposedly verbally committed to Portland, when it is illegal (due to the CBA) for teams to have binding contracts for players.

Same thing with Boozer.  He reportedly agreed to resign with the Cavs, in an under the table deal that is against CBA rules.

However, in this case, it sounds like Daniels has a verbal agreement to sign a contract with the C's, whether it is for the BAE, or a sign and trade, at a time when he is free to sign a contract, and have it be binding.  So does that make this verbal agreement any more binding, legally?

The verbal contract thing is tricky.  Generally, contracts for more than a year, or for more than a certain amount of money, have to be reduced to writing to be enforced as a contract.

However, if a team suffered damages due to a player reneging on a verbal commitment (or vice versa), their may be some way to recover in equity / "quasi-contract".  Those damages would probably be limited to money damages, however, and not "specific performance".

August 4, 2009: looks like the wait goes on....

There's been little progress made between the Pacers and Celtics on a possible sign-and-trade deal for Marquis Daniels.

The Pacers aren't interested in guard Tony Allen, who the Celtics are willing to move.

the celtics great starting five got them to the finals in '08.

guys like house, posey, powe and brown got us over the top.
Meh, every team needs bench players. But our bench wasn't anything special, it was the talent of the Big 3 that got us there.

To say Daniels is the difference is silly in my opinion, when any number of backups could fulfill his role.

Deadon, and TP to boot.

There are a number of players in this league who could fill out our bench.  At this point it's a matter of what the cost is for those players, which is why you see this dragging out.  The longer it goes on, typically, the more cost effective it is for ownership.
