I think Gortat is a good player, and the Magic are definitely a better team for matching the offer, but that is just WAY too much money to pay the backup of your superduper star.  Unless they think they can play both DH and Gortat together, $7 mil is just too much for a backup.  They would be better off finding a competent backup center for half that price and spending the rest of the money elsewhere.
Backup or starter is irrelevant. He is getting the equivalent of MLE money this season, not $7 million. We also used our MLE for a backup big, so I don't see how that is too much.

It is unlikely he will finish that contract with the Magic. But they needed a backup center and their clearly want to win.

They are clearly betting on him continuing to develop and perhaps increase in value. If that doesn't happen, then they will be stuck with a big contract.

But at least they know for sure that he won't get shorter.

I thought he signed for 5 years for 34 Mil?  that's more than the mid level.  If they can play them both together, I guess it's not a bad move, but I just don't see how you could pay that kind of money for someone who will only step on the court when your #1 player is off it.  Would you want to pay 7 mil for our backup SF? (or backup 4 if he could NEVER play with KG?)

No it is not. That is the mid-level exception with annual 8% raises from 5.8 million dollars as a starting point.

It's one year longer than Posey got from NO.  Very reasonable deal.

I didn't know Orlando had the financial flexibily to match the Mavs' offer on Gortat... he doesn't deserve that much money but it's a great move basketball wise. I thought that Orlando got weaker after the Carter acquisition, and that Bass was not enough to make theam real contenders but now we'll have to watch out for Orlando.

His contract will be a burden for the Magic for the coming years but as you all sait it, a trade will probably be made by then.

I'm shocked, I didn't think Orlando would match that offer due to their financial situation (luxury tax, losing a lot of money). Brilliant decision though.

That Orlando Magic team is an immense side. They're the Celtics main competition in the East, and one of the three best teams in the league. I'm very impressed by their roster.

With the loss of Gortat and Bass, does Cuban reconsider BBD?

aaaa...midlevel.  I always think 5 mil...but you're right, that math does work out.  Well good for the Magic for ponying up that kind of dough for that long a time.  It certainly makes them better, and you certainly have to go for it when you have the chance.

I could see maybe a Gortat for Battier trade going down in a few months. Houston is obviously interested in Gortat since they showed up at his doorstep at 12:01 on July 1st and they need a big with Yao going down. They are also rebuilding so Battier doesn't do much for them this year. For the Magic, that's a lot of money to be paying a guy to play 10 minutes a game behind Howard. I think they did this because they think they could trade him for someone more valuable to them later.

This is a scary idea.
In the summer of 2017, I predicted this team would not win a championship for the next 10 years.

3 down, 7 to go.

Gortat just became the Jon Koncak of the 21st century.  Orlando's gonna regret this down the line, unless they can move him for something useful.

Maybe now they can trade him to Dallas so he doesn't leave with them getting nothing. He technically has a NTC but i thought he was happy about going to Dallas.... although now that i look at it, theres not really any players on the Mav's that could be considered a good pickup for Gortat.

My thoughts exactly when hearing this (except Jon Koncak didn't immediately come to mind).

Magic fans, tie bolder to ankle, now swim.

No trade clause? Nah.

Reread the earlier posts. I believe they explain the deal with trading him.
