i think bass still starts to provide some muscle down low..they know what they have with gortat coming off the bench. boston really needs to get moving on some free agents..i guess the magic still have some of their MLE left to go after barnes..orlando is going to be the team we are going to need to get through
Was Bass a restricted FA?

What about Baby over Bass...don't you think that makes more sense? (Weak) Comparison is KG spreading it out for the Landlord (Perk) under the net; reverse that and have baby opening it up more for Howard, seems more logical than Bass replicating to a much lesser extent Howards strengths.

I don't think Baby really has any more range than Bass... they can both shoot out to about 15 feet. They are pretty comparable, but statistically Bass is actually a little better in the major categories (points, rebounds, shooting percentages). Baby doesn't exactly stretch the floor, there are a lot of PFs with more range.

Don't get me wrong, I love BBD, just not sure Bass was a bad choice.

Also, they might not have thought they could get BBD for that price.

I could see maybe a Gortat for Battier trade going down in a few months. Houston is obviously interested in Gortat since they showed up at his doorstep at 12:01 on July 1st and they need a big with Yao going down. They are also rebuilding so Battier doesn't do much for them this year. For the Magic, that's a lot of money to be paying a guy to play 10 minutes a game behind Howard. I think they did this because they think they could trade him for someone more valuable to them later.

Just to be clear, Gortat cannot be traded for 1 year.

I think he cannot be trade to Dallas for 1 year. He can be traded to any other team within a few months with his permission. Or do I have that wrong?

Hmm, I may be wrong, I can't seem to find this part in Coon's FAQ's.

I think that's when you trade someone away, or sign+trade someone away

I can't find confirmation either. I thought it was a 90 day moratorium for trading a signed free agent not involved in a S&T.

This is right.  When you give a player a qualifying offer and it's matched, you can't be traded to the offering team for one year.

It's in Coon's FAQ at #85:

Quote
When can't a player be traded . . . ?

. . . For one year after exercising the right of first refusal to keep a restricted free agent (however, the player can consent to a trade to any team except the team that tried to sign him).

So basically he can be traded.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that the Magic have decided to match Marcin Gortat's five-year, $34 million offer sheet, extended to him by the Mavericks.

via Rotoworld.com

Wow...weird to give that much money to Howards backup? Granted its small money and made sense for the Mavs but why would the Magic pay that?  Desperation move?  I also dont like the Bass signing...Baby would have been a better fit IMO.
How is adding depth to your team a desperation move? Perhaps a bad trade could be a desperation move, but this is just committing to winning this season.

I don't think it's a desperation move.

However, would the Magic have been off keeping Hedu, or instead signing Bass and Gortat?  I think that's a legitimate debate; I'd take Hedu.
