I'm all for keeping Tatum, but $53M is a lot to match. Hayward becomes an absolute necessity and he would have to be re-routed to another team.
The way he is playing now, that doesn't seem likely; but a solid playoff run and his value could grow in a hurry. Still, that would also require trading Hayward, which kind-of feels wrong.
Hayward doesn't have to be in the deal.
Celts just need to package Horford, Brown, Baynes, Yabusele, Ojeleye, and Bird.
Those 6 players will total 48.3m.
If I'm NO, the only one of those players in that bunch that I really want is Brown. A number of them are marginal rotation players at best. All of this to rid myself of a really nice 28 year old player. Why not add Tatum and Smart to Holiday and give myself at least three solid starters to build around. Holiday/Smart is a first rate defensive backcourt and Tatum has elite potential. We are getting one of the best players in the league. They are going to want quality not quantity.
Don't forget the Celts will be adding the 2019 Memphis pick that will not convey this year and could potentially be the #1 pick in 2021.
Also, the Celts would most likely give up the 2019 Kings pick.
It's a lottery pick if the Kings don't make the playoffs.
Add those 2 picks with Brown, Horford, and the other players, it's one heck of a haul for the Pels.
My proposal only happens if the Pels don't want to pay Holiday 79m for the next 3 years.
It's practical to want to get rid of Holiday and his 26m per year if the Pels are just going to be a lottery team for a number of years.
I mean why spend 26m per year on Holiday when you're a rebuilding team?
The final trade proposal would be Brown, Horford, Baynes, Yabusele, Ojeleye, Bird, and the picks from Memphis and Sacramento for AD and Holiday.
For a small market team like the Pels, 79m or 26m per year is a lot of money to spend on a player who is not an All-Star.
