As a GM I want to keep Tatum obviously. As a Man I want to keep Smart. As a Fanboy I want to keep Jaylen.

I like Jaylen as a third bannana with Kyrie and Davis. I realize when push comes to shove the Pelicans demand Tatum.

If we can keep two out of three of these players and unload the draft picks huge win IMO.

It would be hard to see any of them go.  I think Tatum is a necessity in any trade, but I'm hoping they'll take Smart over JB.

Woj:
"Above all else, Boston wants to keep Tatum. Going forward with a big three of Irving, Davis and Tatum -- and filling in the gaps around them as needed -- is probably the ideal scenario. If the Celtics feel it is necessary to hold off any Lakers coup, they can tell the Pelicans they will likely include Tatum in Davis trade talks in July.

That's risky, though. If Boston promises that in absolute terms, the Pelicans would expect the Celtics to hold to that assurance. Reneging would damage Boston's leaguewide credibility in a way that could take years to repair."

Truthfully I want Hayward to return to All-Star form next year and for us to win with Tatum, Smart, AND Brown.  I really don't want to lose Tatum in an AD trade but I've accepted that this isn't realistic.  Danny needs to push hard to retain Jaylen and Smart.  Losing 2 out of the 3 would be open up too many holes to compete with the Warriors.

Sentimentally I would hate to lose Smart more than anyone on the roster.

I want all three and want Hayward and terry and picks traded for Davis.

Brown/tatum/horford brought this team to the conference finals.

Davis has never done that.

The goal is the finals, not the conference finals.

Right now the Celts are a very good team.
If you add Anthony Davis to a Kyrie led Celts team, Celts become an elite team.

GSW already won a championship without KD.
But it didn't stop them from going after KD.

If there's an opportunity to upgrade, you do it.

It's tough to do that and make the money work, especially since NO isn't going to be open to Horford or Hayward.

Smart is my spirit animal. I love watching him play for the Boston Celtics. I am really hoping that he doesn't get traded.

I think Brown is a sleeping dragon. I (irrationally) think that Brown has the chance to be the best player in this trade. I'm scared to trade Brown.

The rational part of me know's Tatum is the best/most promising of the three, but Tatum doesn't get me in the gut the same way Smart and Brown do. Don't get me wrong. I love Tatum, but he doesn't speak to me on the level that Brown and Smart do.

If we're going to get AD, and I'm not sure I want that to happen...I'd want to trade Tatum, Hayward and 2 1st round picks. I think Kyrie, Smart, Brown, Horford, AD sounds like a beast of a lineup. This is why I'm not the GM.

I'm glad we have Danny Ainge.
My biases, in order of fervor:
Pro:
Smart, Brown, Hayward, Tatum, Kemba, Grant Williams, Sleepy Williams, Edwards!

Anti:
Kanter, Semi, Theis, Poierier

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Maybe it is the wording of the question ('secretly'), but similar results have been seen in the thread I started a few days ago about who to trade between Brown and Smart (Tatum was a given in the trade).

Even though most posts seems to indicate that keeping Brown (or obviously Tatum) is the best idea, poll results are showing Celtics Strong nation prefers Smart...by a wide margin.

For this exercise, even though Brown is probably my favorite of the 3, I prefer to keep Tatum. Brown or Smart fit 'better' in the starting line-up moving forward (with Hayward hopefully regaining his form), but just from a value and contract standpoint, Tatum is the only choice.

Mike

The magic number we want to hit is $21.6 million.  That fits the "125% + $100k" rule.  However, it assumes that Davis waives his trade kicker and that there are no unlikely bonuses included in the salary listed on the internet.

Tatum: $7,830,000
Williams: $1,940,160
Yabu: $3,117,240

Those three pieces get us to $12,887,440.

In other words, we're around $8.7 million short.

This is where draft picks could come in.  Right now, it looks like the Memphis pick will NOT convey this draft.  The Clippers pick is unlikely to convey, as they've been playing relatively poorly and sit in 8th place in the West with the Lakers two games behind them.

Let's say we end up with the 24th pick (our own) and the 13th pick (the Kings).  The "rookie scale" at 120% for those picks is as follows:

13th: $3.635 million
24th: $2.282 million

Combined, that's roughly $5.917 million.  In other words, we're $2.78 million short without Jaylen *or* Smart.  Incidentally, if we get one more pick from either Memphis or the Clippers that falls 18th or better, we'd be able to complete the trade using drafted and signed rookies.

One thing to keep an eye on:  does Danny give a fringe free agent / buyout a two year contract this season using the MLE?  If he does, he could add roughly $5.4 million to our books next season, making it easier to complete a trade financially.
