i don't ,  i care about winning

Winning requires great players

great players are expensive

And why should we care .....not buying expensive tickets to see a cheap sorry team.

Lakers , Cavs and Warriors fans sure cared while they had great players.

Let the money fly !

You should care.  Ownership will pay some luxury tax but they aren't fools.  The repeater's tax is extremely onerous and that team with great players that you want will end up getting broken up because of it.  Getting out of the luxury tax this year delays when we'd get hit with the repeater tax.

I don't think this is a case of Ainge holding his cards close to his chest, though he is doing that as well in a way. Mostly he is telling it like it is. Davis can't be signed until next season so he can only really tinker and there isn't much to be done.

Danny may be right, but I never believe him 100%. He plays his cards close to his vest, so if he were working on something, he wouldn't tell the public.

Interesting that Wyc was talking about being active in February (and saying he’s always kept abreast on trade talks), and Danny claiming nothing out there.

I think Wyc is the optimist fan who speaks from the heart while Danny is the calculated realist.

Don’t see any real trades out there that won’t compromise the future more than help the present.

Only thing I see is adding a decent player via the MLE.

If we nab a buyout candidate, I hope Ainge can add an extra year to use that salary (as an expiring) in the summer for Davis.

It’s not us fans that will be caring about luxury or repeater tax, it will be the people who have to pay it. Fans would advocate spending 1m on payroll because it’s not coming out of our pocket

I heard Wyc say they’re prepared to pay luxury tax as long as the team is contending. But they don’t want to be like Miami with a massive payroll and not contending. And I’m guessing they won’t want to pay repeater tax for too long.
Any odd typos are because I suck at typing on an iPhone :D

Danny is probably right that there is not much out there but we need some size.  We could benefit by trading some of our talent for a talented big.  I am not suggesting that we trade for the sake of trading but I don't buy that we have enough talent.  We can get better.
Do we need size if we are healthy? No one complained about size when Horford, Theis, Baynes and Williams were healthy. People were actually complaining that Williams wasn't getting enough minutes.

We have size, but I think we need a shot blocker...Probably won't be much available until the offseason.

Wait for Kanter to be bought out!!!

I assume he can play better than Yabu and when Theis shows his inconsistency. Kanter is a load on the boards (esp. O boards) and would really bolster the second unit.

Yes this team absolutely needs to upgrade its bigs and frankly all but Horford aren't all that difficult to upgrade.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism

TP - this is my main goal, too. Whoever we trade to get under the tax shouldn’t have much of an effect this year anyway and we would then have the ability to sign a bought out player with the extra roster spot.

I have to imagine DA is at least making this a priority. A couple of big games couldn’t come at a better time.

No surprise, if you've followed this management team.  Wyc famously said "fireworks" and it didn't happen.  Danny is cold and calculating with what he says which often makes it impossible to predict what he will do.  That said, I take Ainge at his word that other teams are not offering up anyone who is a significant upgrade...and Wyc said they ARE calling.

Yes and no. Yes, the team, for their long term benefit, need to get out of the luxury tax this year and they should be able to by getting out of Bird's contract and swapping out Yabu for a min contract. I think. Might be real close.

But no, in that this team could be contenders for 6-8 years and since ownership said as long as they are contenders they will pay, then I am not going to worry about it. The team has made huge profits over the last 5-7 years while not being in the luxury tax. Huge profits. And being contenders means franchise value will increase a bunch that will offset any day to day losses the team takes on by paying the tax.

So overall, it's not something that I think fans need to worry about.
