What if the NBA never veto'ed the Garnett for Deandre Jordan trade?

Ainge traded Garnett for Deandre Jordan. The NBA vetoed the deal. Thats how we ended up with plan B (nets picks for pierce/garnert)

one of the proposed trades attached to the eventual deal that got Rivers out of the final three years of his contract in Boston and allowed him to sign a new three-year deal with Los Angeles had the Clippers sending Jordan and a draft pick to the Celtics for Garnett.


It was a side deal that the NBA nixed because such side deals go against league rules. Rivers said he's happy the deal fell apart. He had hoped there would be a way for the Clippers to land Garnett, but not at the expense of Jordan.

How different would the Celtics be if we had gotten deAndre Jordan back? Would Ainge have built around rondo and Jordan? Or maybe eventually ainge sends Jordan and rondo in a bigger package to the mavs?

Its hard to understand how bad Ainge wanted deandre. Maybe he just wanted An asset to help with the rebuild. Or maybe it was an idea for a team he was constructing. He ended up eventually going in a different direction center-wise with Horford

Exactly, the league squashing the Clippers deal was a blessing.

which leads to the next question- has ainge lucked into his situations? Sure it was his deal but. A lot of times its his plan B... He also wanted to move a lot of picks (possibly the Brooklyn picks) for justice Winslow lol

To Ainges credit I bet most other GMs don't have such a well thought out "plan B" after their first trade proposal falls apart

I think Wyc admitted to nixing the Winslow trade, not DA backing out or Charlotte saying no, even though DA said he was glad Charlotte said no. Maybe I'm wrong and Wyc was commenting on a different trade but that's the one I thought of.

Perkins was coming off an serious injury and was probably never going to be the same. Can we stop acting like it was Ainge's fault? Perkins also wanted more money, when he knew well enough he wasnt worth it.

An interesting follow-up is - if that trade goes through, does Danny try to build around Jordan or flip him within a year or so for more rebuilding assets? 

He would've had 2 more years on his deal, I think, and based on Danny's history I've gotta believe he's not willing to pay Jordan long-term without a great roster around him.

The NBA didn’t veto any deal.

Rather, they ruled we couldn’t trade Doc Rivers in return for players, and after the Doc deal went through, put a trading restriction on the two teams to prevent a wink wink deal. 

But yes, it’s hard to imagine things going better for us if that deal went through.

Good question! If Bledsoe was also included in the Jordan deal like Ainge wanted, who does he keep long-term...Rondo or Bledsoe?

It was a case of money. Wyc simply didn't want to pay big bucks for a defensive player. They also let Posey go when he got overpaid by N.O. Losing Perk and Posey was a big chunk of their chemistry and started the decline. It was a case of both getting overpaid as FAs to get them away from the Celtics. And Wyc was determined to get back under the cap after they won a championship.

I don't know how Jordan would fit on Stevens coached team. The Celtics have been getting killed by big centers lately--Drummond, Capela, the rookie from Phoenix. Baynes can't really stop those guys. Horford was out for a couple of those games, and he isn't a rim protector.

Williams is the guy, but he's getting his experience sitting on the bench. The excuse against Houston is he was hurt.? The kid hasn't played enough to get hurt lately. With a guy like that, you stick him near the basket and plug the lanes. The points are coming from uncontested layups. And they are getting rebounded to death.
