Kobe made headlines yesterday by saying that soon Laker fans will be “laughing at Warriors fans” and that Los Angeles will win a title before they know it. It almost seems like every week one of Kobe’s idiotic comments will leap in to the headlines and will be picked apart and analyzed by first take - and this is one of the few ones that actually isn’t about his legacy or impact on the game. I’ve never seen an ex player desperately try to cling to the spotlight as much as this guy whether he’s on sportscenter promoting his tell all book which was released about 10-15 years too prematurely. With Kobe it’s never been a LeBron type situation where I dislike him, but respect him. I’ve just always thought the guy was a complete narcissistic megalomaniac.
And as far as these recent comments go, he’s just plain wrong. The Lakers aren’t in that good of a situation. Sure, they have possibly the greatest player ever, but he’s far and away the best player on the team at age 35. Their young guys are good, not great. And they don’t have anyone else on big or expiring contracts to match salaries on a trade for a star. They can probably be outbid in such trades by at least a handful of teams such as the Celtics. Sure they have cap space but I don’t really see what makes LA all that of a desirable destination for upcoming free agents like Durant and Kawhi who would both be leaving better situations to play there. Sorry Kobe, but the warriors will reign supreme in the West for years to come, and the Fakers will never surpass or even tie the Celtics in overall title count.
