Lousy coach, but his team isn’t exactly stacked with talent.

I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

He was never a good coach and probably didn't deserve getting a head coaching job to begin with. But LeBron liked him and could obviously usurp Lue's authority and be the defacto coach, so Lue got the job.

He coached a team to a championship, even if he just road on LeBron's coat tails to do it.  He's got that ring and no one can take that from him.  I think he was a good assistant coach when he was here and may have been a good coach with a different team.   I don't see him a tactician but I can see him as a player's coach who can get a young team to the 7th or 8th seed.  After that his tactical deficiencies will bring his team down.  We shot bad on the close out games and really should have won that series. The pressure of the moment got to us and the experience LeBron and his cast was too much for us.

Makes me think back to last year when Jeff Van Gundy kept harping on why Ty Lue is never mentioned among the coaching elite and why he thinks it’s terrible he gets no credit bc Lebrons on the team.  There’s not a lot of talent on that team but they still have Kevin Love, a promising rookie in Sexton, Jordan Clarkson, and Rodney Hood.  Would Stevens or Pop bc 0-6?

I’m not saying he’s a bad coach, but he got that job bc of who he was friends with, not bc of any coaching style,  philosophy, or track record and everyone knew it.  I really think the only reason this didn’t happen in the off-season was to avoid the confirmation that he was only there bc of Lebron.

Probably the most telling bit in the ESPN article about the firing:

Quote
Cleveland's ownership and management had hoped the team would compete for a playoff spot

Given the state of the Eastern conference, I don't want to call them delusional, but the Cavs were, at best, a long shot to make the 8th seed and I feel like I'm being charitable.

Another thing to think about:

Quote
Lue is still owed roughly $20 million on the contract he signed in 2016 after the team won the title.

Must be nice.

I read plenty of positive things on this board about him when he was an assistant with Boston

Not exactly related to this, but the Cavaliers are one of the worst run organizations in the NBA and will continue to be so until Gilbert leaves (never).

It's probably killing Dan that they're maybe the worst team in the league again now that LeBron's left. LeBron is the only reason that city has ever enjoyed any kind of success in spite of Dan's best efforts of sabotage.
