I think one of the biggest problems of this team is that we don't know who the best player is. The team doesn't know who the best player is. The coach doesn't know who's the best player, everybody's trying to figure it out because there's no true alpha on this team.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Since this just came up in another thread, I will reiterate that I think it is Tatum...now and in the future. He can get whatever shot he wants and is long enough on defense to make a difference.

At the very least, this choice should age well  ;)

At the moment, Irving. Hayward could challenge when he regains form.

Long term definitely JT

I'm still going Irving.

Maybe by the end of the year it's Tatum but right now it's still Irving.

  • GOT IT!!!
I thought about making this thread but never did. By the end of season Tatum will be the guy. Gonna cut Kyrie slack coming off surgery but eventually it has to happen.

If “Best Player” means “contributes the most to winning basketball games”, then it’s Al Horford.
'I was proud of Marcus Smart. He did a great job of keeping us together. He might not get credit for this game, but the pace that he played at, and his playcalling, some of the plays that he called were great. We obviously have to rely on him, so I’m definitely looking forward to Marcus leading this team in that role.' - Jaylen Brown, January 2021

Bingo.
So far this year, the regular rotation player with largest On/Off discrepancy is Marcus Smart.  He is also 2nd overall of the regular rotation in straight up +- behind only Baynes (who obviously has missed some games).  Tatum is the only starter in the positives for both of those stats.  Thus, in the 5 games so far Horford is definitely not the guy contributing most to winning basketball games (for the record, last year Brown led the team in both categories).
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

1 - Horford
2 - Hayward
3 - Kyrie

Tatum still needs to prove himself. As does Jaylen. I expect both of them to move ahead of Kyrie in the next year or two.

This team is freakishly talented. Top 5 players league wide at each position.

Tatum has been our best player on the court this year, period.

Irving is more consistent, but Tatum is the overall better player.  The gap will become very noticeable with a little more time.

It's a good question -- the Celtics will only win a championship when Tatum is unanimously the best player on the team.

Hayward not top 7 on this team right now..it will take awhile to get his body into NBA shape..plus with that injury, will he ever be the player he once was?
C/PF-Horford, Baynes, Noel, Theis, Morris,
SF/SG- Tatum, Brown, Hayward, Smart, Semi, Clark
PG- Irving, Rozier, Larkin

Absolutely correct.  Al would also be the single most difficult player to replace if we lost one of the starting 5 due to injury.  The flip side is that this team's ceiling is limited if someone else doesn't emerge as the most impact player when the playoffs arrive.

Irving and Tatum are obviously the most important when it comes to generating offense in tight games against elite competition.

It's fair to argue that Hayward would be the best player if his game recovers completely by the end of the season.  Similar to Horford, he's the only player who can consistently provide positive contributions in every aspect of the game.

It is Kyrie, but he hasn't been playing like it. He can get to any spot on the floor and should be taking 20 shots a game but he's playing passive for some reason.
