Kyrie Irving announced his plans to re-sign last week, but a source tells
BSJ  that the Celtics remain engaged in extension talks with Terry Rozier ahead of Oct. 15 deadline.

A closer look at the likelihood of a deal getting done and thoughts from Rozier on whether he could see himself in a 6th man role long-term: "That's something I'm really going to have to sit down and think about."

  • Let's Go Celtics!
Celtics are always engaged in extension talks with pending RFAs but deals don't get completed just before the deadline. I think the last one to get done was Rondo in 2009.

SG: OG Anunoby/Norman Powell/Matisse Thybulle

Terry in hand is worth more than Terry in the bush.
Let's get it done. It would actually raise Terry's trade value.

Exactly what I was thinking... Trading TR locked for 3 4 years is much better than as an expiring. If he gets trades that is....

Somebody please confirm this, but I think that if TR signs an extension for 4+ years, or more than 5% raises, then he can’t be traded for 6 months.

I believe it is so.
I am not hoping to trade him, but I'd rather see his value go up than not.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I believe only one of Rozier/Smart will be here for the long-term. If we lock up Rozier for a similar (but not more) contract that Smart received, I would be okay with that. It would give DA and Brad a fair chance to evaluate both this year and make a decision. A lot of teams have cap space next summer and it would be pretty easy to move one of them without taking back much salary.

I hate to be forced to let Rozier go just because we signed Smart.

Oh, and there is always the possibility that Hayward doesn't quite work out and is dealt (not my hope, obviously); in which case, re-signing Terry would be a wise move.

I like the idea of signing him to an extension so that the Celtics have leverage to trade him in the summer if needed vs. having to deal with trying to use RFA leverage.

I could see an extension being dun with a verbal understanding that if Terry wanted to be traded in the summer the Celtics would pursue this in good faith.

So if you’re Terry, do you sign for a penny less than Marcus?

I wouldn't, if I were him. They're right around equal in my eyes.
Smart is about 2 weeks older, so nothing there.
Smart is a way better team and individual defender, and is far more versatile on that end.
Smart is also a better passer.
Rozier is a much better shooter and scorer than Smart, both in efficiency and volume, and is less turnover prone. He also has less injury history.

'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PG: Terry Porter (90-91) / Steve Francis (00-01)
SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

I don't think he does.
I wouldn't, IMO the market appreciates guys with clear roles more.

It’s about market value. Many more teams would be interested in Terry than Marcus. He will command more money. Also more cap space next season. In line to get not less than 15 x 4.

Am already experiencing buyer remorse on Smart contract.

I would have signed Rozier over Smart. I am sick of Smart's terrible shooting and his knucklehead behavior.

With Marcus you know what you are getting- he is the same player he was for about 2-3 seasons.
Rozier had one great playoffs last year, but before that he wasn't anything special- few flashes, few good games- nothing over the top.

Factually incorrect. As a starter before the playoffs he went for 15.6 pts, 6.4 rebs, 5.1 asts over 33 mpg. His stats and efficiency in the playoffs were very close to that. Basically it's who he is as a starter at age 24. That's pretty 'over the top'
