Oof. Obviously Deng didn't play last year, but he also wasn't good the year prior when he did get time for the Lakers. Sure, the Lakers of two years ago were a clown show, but you're basically betting that in his age-33 season there's still the age-30 Deng from Miami in there somewhere, despite him turning 34 this coming season and having 33,000 NBA minutes on his odometer already.
I can't beat this drum enough, but I'd be very nervous about any moves that look too overtly of cost-cutting over on-court results heading into Kyrie's (and possibly Horford's) free agency (or agencies). You don't want a guy's last thoughts walking out of the locker room in the spring being that the team lost in [insert round here] because Ainge salary-dumped an important piece to make it easier to build around the guys expected to take the reigns after he leaves.
