▪ Note: The Celtics cannot acquire a player like Anthony Davis because of the Rose rule. Boston is only allowed to trade for one player (Kyrie Irving) that was signed with the Rose rule.

Any cap experts know if this is correct because this is the first I've heard of it being applied in that manner or barring Boston from trading for Davis?
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

Apparently it was correct under the old CBA, I'd never heard of this restriction. You could have two but one would be from your own rookie deal and one from a trade. Under the new CBA this limit has been lifted, you can have 2 designated players no matter their origin.

I have no idea how the old 2011 CBA contracts would interact with that new rule. It doesn't matter as Kyrie's contract expires this year anyways and Davis isn't going to be moved this season.

Implemented as part of the new 2011 Collective Bargaining Agreement, the Derrick Rose rule increases the size of the contract that teams can offer to players coming off of their rookie contract from 25% of the salary cap (~$14.5 million first year) to 30% of the salary cap (~$17.4 million first year) if the player has accomplished any of the following in his first four years in the league:
a) Won an MVP Award
b) Was twice voted as an All-Star starter
c) Was twice named to an All-NBA team (first, second, or third)

It's nicknamed the Derrick Rose rule because he (the 2011 NBA MVP) was expected to be the first player to benefit from the new agreement, and is the only 1st-4th year player who has already qualified.

However, the first player to benefit from the rule is actually Kevin Durant, a two-time All-NBA selection. Durant had agreed to a "maximum" extension with the OKC Thunder, and the league agreed to retroactively apply the criteria to his contract, increasing his the value of his 5-year contract by about $15 million.

This is half-correct.  You can only have two designated rookies on your team at a time, only one of whom can have been acquired by trade.  So the Celtics cannot trade for Davis until Irving is either traded or is no longer a designated rookie (so next year if he resigns with the Celtics).

This is questionable as why would, if the reports were true, Danny be calling and asking about if Davis was available in a trade. This could have happened before we traded for Kyrie but reports were that DA is constantly trying to pry Davis away from NOL....hmmmm....

I don’t think Davis is being traded this year anyway so fine by me.  The only thing is I wish the draft was after free agency.  Since we would have already selected our potential 4 first round picks they might be harder to attach to a trade if we use the picks first.

So I think this part, "... (Kyrie Irving) that was signed with the Rose rule" is the error here.  Kyrie was not signed using the Rose Rule from what I remember of his extension.

But didn't Kyrie not even qualify for Rose Rule?!?

unless Kyrie gets traded in the deal

You know something like this

Boston - Davis, L. Thomas, Mudiay
New Orleans - Hardaway, Brown, Ntilikina, Knox, a Boston 2019 1st (non-sacto)
New York - Irving, Hill, Morris

So Boston gets Davis and adds some bench depth.  NY gets Irving.  NO gets 4 young players of varying degree of talent and a future 1st.

Obviously I think the odds of New Orleans trading Davis this season are just about 0 (and are only not 0 in the off chance, Davis asks out), but that is certainly the type of trade I could see Boston exploring.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

OK, nevermind, apparently this applies if the criteria is included in the extension, regardless of whether the player later qualifies or not.

Correct.  The max 5-year extension is what’s at issue, not whether they also qualified for the 30% max salary.
