Danny & Trust will be faced with decisions.
It leads me to believe that DA could really be "in" on Kawhi Leonard. It also leads me to believe we could go for a PG in the upcoming draft and that Irving could not be part of our future plans. Hear me out...
If you look at our current salary distribution it tells a tale. DA is gonna have to look at roster balance and budget allocation. While I realize we don't care about this topic (it's Monopoly money) he does. In theory, spend per position should equate to value and strength at position (if your decisions are correct). And spend per position could be contained if you swing and hit on a draft prospect (i.e. Tatum/Brown). Here is a breakdown of things right now:
PG: $31m (assuming Irving/Smart @ QO/Rozier/Larkin)
SG: $6m (assuming Brown/Bird)
SF: $38m (Hayward/Tatum)
PF: $10m (Morris/Theis/Ojeleye/Yabusele)
C: $35m (assuming we re-sign Baynes or another decent center)
So we are underspent at SG and PF positions (currently speaking).
I believe DA would rather balance the roster our with salary distribution at other positions thus the reason he is looking to make a heavier investment at SG position. I do think Irving could be a casualty given he could lock up PG position @ a cheaper rate at least next 2-3 years (Smart/Rozier will be in a similar situation as Smart after this year which is why I believe we draft PG: I like this kid from Kentucky Shai Gilgeous-Alexander).
So this year, could he consider a consolidation of assets to grab Kawhi Leonard? Sure. Lock up PG position with $15m committed to the position in Smart (2 years $12m per) and Rozier ($3.5m) and re-balance roster.
Thoughts?
