The Celtics season was a 10/10 success. Nobody thought that they would be anywhere close to game 7 of the ECF once Hayward went down. The Celtics had a great regular season, then we found out that Kyrie was out for the year. At this juncture, many thought that we couldn't get past Milwaukee. They did. Not only did they beat the Bucks, they beat the Sixers in a series that they were not favored. They didn't just squeak by Philly- they beat the crap out of them in 5 games. Then they were an underdog vs Cleveland. After a great series without their two best players, the Celtics had a bad game. One bad game.
Why have I been reading and listening to grown men acting like spoiled kids since last night?
Why is it crazy to think that this season was a smashing success?
Well, they had four bad games, actually, with the last one being a complete abomination and total choke job.
I admit that I thought this team was cooked after Hayward went down—I was wrong. I also admit that I thought they were cooked when Kyrie went down—again, I was wrong, and I have no problem admitting that.
People on your side of this debate are saying that we should be happy that this team made it so far after so many obstacles, to which I say two things: 1) As far as I know, none of us on this side of this debate is saying it was a crappy season, and 2) the fact that this team overcame so much—namely key injuries and youthful inexperience—is in fact proof that they SHOULD have won this series. People like you are saying, "We couldn't have justifiably expected more!" And people like me are saying, "Yes we could have!"
Because they showed, by overcoming so much, that they legitimately belonged, and were no longer just some cute Cinderella story. They belong, and they should be in the Finals right now—not
could be,
should be. These guys are still growing and developing, but they grew and developed enough this season that they should not be sitting at home right now. And if my expectations are high, maybe it's because they showed me that I should have high expectations, that they were worthy of those high expectations. And the one guy who really showed up last night—Tatum—was the youngest and most inexperienced of the bunch. What was everyone else's excuse?
