Thank you Detroit!
Supposedly a similar offer to what was offered to Charlotte so we could draft Winslow.

Seems like Ainge might have been panicking a bit back in 2015.

Um, those picks turned into Rozier and a bunch of hot garbage.  DA's offer was not nearly as attractive as people make it out to be.

And as far as Rozier, you can probably bet that those teams would have drafted someone else.

Jaylen Brown or Tatum was hot garbage?

Zach Lowe, Simmons, and others have been consistent one of the picks offered was a BKN pick.

It was allegedly the same offer Ainge made to Charlotte, which included the Jaylen Brown pick, as well as Rozier, another mid-tier 1st in that draft, and a future 1st.

This is what Zach Lowe said Boston offered Charlotte (which presumably was the same deal offered to Detroit)

"The Celtics offered four first-round picks for the chance to move up from no. 16 to no. 9: that 16th pick, no. 15 (acquired in a prearranged contingency deal with the Hawks), one unprotected future Brooklyn pick, and a future first-rounder from either the Grizzlies or Timberwolves, per sources familiar with the talks."

Does make you wonder... would Winslow be closer to Brown's level if he had come to Boston?

If so, and not having any guarantee of Brooklyn getting #3 it seems a little less crazy. A little.

I really doubt it.

Miami does a good job developing players, they aren't a black hole for talent like the Kings/Magic.

Given how unpredictable the draft is, its almost like you should never package multiple chances for just 1 slightly better chance.

Always amazed by the narrative on this one, that Ainge got lucky (true) but that Jordan's an idiot.

Not that I don't think Jordan is an idiot when it comes to GM moves, but it's the way the narrative focuses solely on Jordan here.

According to Simmons,  the deal was offered to New York (#4), Detroit (#8), Charlotte (#9), and Miami (#10), but everybody just makes fun of Jordan for not making the trade while the other teams have mostly stayed free from criticism.  And I have to think if it was offered to 4 and 8-10, then it was likely offered to 5-7 as well, but again I only really ever see Jordan criticized here.  Only New York should be off the hook for taking Porzingis.

And if Simmons interpretation is to believed, Jordan was contemplating it but couldn't figure it out in time, while Riley just laughed at Ainge and hung up.  Who deserves more criticism, the guy trying to figure out if the deal could work, or the guy who laughed at it and didn't even consider it?

I think the Knicks passed on it, I know the Pistons passed on it. Whatever it was eight, nine, 10. It was Pistons passed. They offered the same thing. They wouldn’t even talk about it, because they wanted to take Stanley Johnson.

The ninth pick was Charlotte. Jordan couldn’t figure it out in time and finally didn’t do it, so they passed on those four picks, one of which would have been Jaylen Brown. Another one would have been Rozier.

And then the 10th pick, they called Riley, and Riley just laughed and hung up on them. Riley was like, “No, I’m taking Justise Winslow. I’ll talk to you guys later.”

The reason Jordan is the idiot is the report says he was offered that specific package of 4 picks. Its unclear exactly when he put that on the table, it might have been Jordan was the only team to engage in real haggling back and forth to get the BKN pick on the table.

The DET report is new iirc, so SVG wasn't an idiot because that wasn't reported till just now.

From the story:

The Celtics owned too many picks in the 2015 and 2016 drafts. They needed to unload some, simply because of roster spots. And many were so low that the quality of prospect really wouldn’t move the needle. The Pistons would have been in a similar spot.

The Celtics had the 16, 28, 33, and 45 picks in 2015 and what ended up being the 16, 23, 31, 35, 45, 51, and 58 picks in 2016. Those players turned out to be Terry Rozier, R.J. Hunter, Jordan Mickey, Marcus Thornton, Guerschon Yabusele, Ante Zizic, Deyonta Davis, Rade Zagorac, Demetrius Jackson, Ben Bentil, and Abdel Nader. Only three of those 11 players logged any minutes for the Celtics this year.

It’s basically an attempt to take a wheelbarrow full lesser picks and turn it into a more valuable one. Which was pretty much the MO of the Jeff Bower and Stan Van Gundy front office. So not only was it logical for them to turn down, well, we all agree that Danny Ainge is a smart guy, right? So the fact that he was trying to follow a similar tactic as the Pistons’ front office...that’s telling, right?

Ugh, the "story" you're quoting.

So we have a quote from Bill Simmons, that the whole "article" is based on.

so they passed on those four picks, one of which would have been Jaylen Brown. Another one would have been Rozier.

And then a blogger, who has no apparent NBA connections, speculates on all the late picks the C's have, and you quote that as a fact to prove it was only poor picks offered?

Might as well be quoting me or Moranis or Fafnir or Roy H. or nickagneta to prove your point.

Except we also had what ended up being the #3 pick in the 2016 draft. This article is hot garbage.
