Nightmare scenario, where the Sixers shock Ainge, and draft Tatum. What would he do and who would we draft.

Easy answer is Fultz, I'd like to think Danny was smart enough to avoid him though. Safe pick was Josh Jackson although he's a moron. In the brilliant pick was Markkanen.

Mitchell was just not realistic as the third pick although he should have been.

I feel like it would've been either Markannen or Jackson. I voted for Lauri, but could've seen either being picked.

Or maybe Fultz, but DA was evidently not that high on him

Danny seemed very interested in Jackson. Trading down to 3 guaranteed he would get what he wanted (a good wing) he would just pick the one available out of Tatum or Jackson.  I  believe the decision was close at times between Tatum and Jackson. I think he wanted an elite swing and didn’t want to use a top pick on a guard. He so far seems to sway away from guards at the top of the lottery when given the option (preferring brown to Dunn, Murray, hield) and prefer Tatum to (fultz ball smith and fox) .

It makes sense, guards are the easiest position to find as there is an abundance of them. Plus we were pretty stacked at the  position at the time

Ange already knew that the Sixers wanted Fultz and that The Lakers were definitely going to take ball. Everyone knew it. If the Lakers weren't  so locked into ball there might have been some chance they wouldn't get Tatum. I think that if Philly had stayed at 3 they would've still gotten Fultz. I think that Philly became obsessed with Fultz and also selling there fans the number one pick. It was one of the best trades in NBA history.

Good points TP. To your point the Winslow trade. Gross overpay Four firsts offered for Winslow. Why? Considered the elite Wing player of that draft.

Like others have already alluded to, Ainge was never going to trade down if he couldn't get the deal with Philly done, i'd say that 76ers were afraid of the Lakers taking Fultz.

Here is a quote from Ainge after the 17 draft:

"The draft was very even we felt at the top, all the way through maybe five or six," Ainge said. "And it was very difficult. There was a lot of players we liked in this year's draft."...Furthermore, Ainge added that Tatum was who they would have taken with the top pick if they had kept it instead of making the deal with Philadelphia. "Yes, we would have picked him with the first pick," Ainge said after the selection.

Crazy if DA really would have taken Tatum #1.

That’s literally a free lotto pick (hoping Sac doesn’t win lottery next year).

I sincerely hope Philly fans spent tonight wondering what life would be like with Tatum.

In hindsight, Mitchell should be the guy if Tatum is gone.  But at the time of the draft, I feel that Ainge was looking very hard at Josh Jackson.

Fortunately DA already knew that the Sixers were moving up for Fultz and the Lakers were in love with Ball.  So he knew with 99% certainty that Tatum would be there at #3.

All's well that ends well.  DA fleeced Phila, and they didn't even realize it till Fultz showed up at camp and he couldn't shoot a jumper!

If trades are judged over time rather than at the moment, it may turn out to be a great heist, but if Fultz emerges as a great backcourt player  for the Sixers and the Sac pick ends up late lottery and not useful, then it could be viewed in posterity as a trade that helped both teams.  As far as the trade at the time it looked good for C’s but there were those who praised the Sixers for getting their perfect fit guard and the consensus top player and some protection on the pick.

but if Fultz emerges as a great backcourt player

Other than the hype train, what makes you think this is possible.   He could not even get his team to the NCAA tourney, ditto for Simmons?

I agree, Mitchell should be the answer with what we know now.

Fultz assuming Ball and Tatum were gone. If Tatum and Fultz were gone. I don't think Ball was on DA's radar with his shooting mechanics issue and the Cs positional needs and thus Jackson or a trade for SAC's #5 and #10 picks.

Doesn't matter he only did the deal because he knew Tatum would still be there at #3 otherwise he would have taken him at #1.

TP for the best answer. It would have been either Fultz or Jackson depending on what the Lakers would have done.

I don't think it is a given that the Lakers take Ball over Fultz.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

I originally thought of the trade with Sac as well but wondered if Danny would really want 2 rookies to integrate with the team who were on a lesser-tier than Tatum (pre-draft).

5 & 10 ended up being Fox and Collins but if Danny did make that deal with the Kings, (assuming Tatum gone by #3 and no interest in Fultz/Ball/Jackson at that spot) would he have kept those picks and perhaps taken Markkanen at 5 (went at 7) and Mitchell at 10 (went at 13)?

Would the C's fans be thinking they still got the best of the deals (now the Laker/Kings pick for trading with Philly to go with Markkanen and Mitchell) or would they be bemoaning Danny getting hustled and missing out on Tatum after the season he's had?
