"The Celtics have already knocked out the 2nd best player in the East, Ben Simmons, the third best, Embiid, and the fourth, Giannis."
-Jason McIntyre

Ben Simmons is now the 2nd best player in the East. And Cowherd didnt challenge him at all. These are the people that are paid money to analyze basketball.

This reminds me of American Idol when you see someone come on and confidently sing like crap and you wonder "How do they not know that they're terrible?" And then the camera changes over to their mom and dad and friends all cheering along saying he sounds great... And then you know.

You'd think that this series would change a lot of minds, but now the narrative has changed to "he's just a rookie." Look, I won't sugar coat anything. Ben Simmons is not a functional NBA player until he can shoot from further than 3 feet from the basket. He is the worst shooter in the NBA. Either him or Andre Roberson. He's not on Magic Johnson or LeBrons passing level. Not even close. He's not even on Rondo's passing level when Rondo was a rookie. He may be 6'10", but guess what.... height in basketball is an advantage so that you can mainly shoot over people and guard people from shooting over you. If you weren't allowed to block shots, there would be a lot more Isaiah Thomases. He can't shoot, and he is chasing small guys around all game. His height is currently useless.

If the defense gets back in transition and obstructs the paint, the Sixers are playing 4 on 5. He puts up functionally useless numbers: defensive rebounds that were freebies and fake assists where he just passes the ball to someone and they create a shot. He has so much work to do to be where he's currently overrated. I think he can maybe get there in 5 years if he busts his ass. He seems like a slacker to me though.

To sum up: TJ McConnell is better than him.

That makes no sense.

First, Embiid is much better than Simmons.

Second, Simmons -- right now -- isn't even an all-star level player.  Stats-wise, yes.  But playing?  No way.  Give me Horford over him, and I think most coaches agree.

I don't even know who the second, third, and fourth best players in the East are.  Maybe Embiid and Giannis belong there.  I'm absolutely certain that Ben Simmons does not, however.

It's funny how when Irving was with Cleveland these same "experts" thought he was the second best player in the conference. Now he's basically a forgotten man behind 2 guys that can't shoot and a big that's getting exposed in PNR D.

I don't think players that aren't playing right now are exactly relevant to this discussion.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
"The Celtics have already rocked out the 2nd best player in the East, Ben Simmons Al Horford, the third best, Embiid Rozier, and the fourth, Giannis Tatum."
-Jason McIntyre

McIntyre made just a couple of typos. I guess he forgot about Brown.  ;)

Well, McIntyre didn't say "remaining in the East." He simply said "best players in the East." Giannis also isn't playing right now either, so it would also apply to him, yet he was listed.

Regardless, it's a dumb comment to make, as Embiid and Giannis are clearly better than Simmons.

That whole Philly team has been so overrated the past couple of months simply because they went on a winning streak against tanking teams and have a couple of marketable stars, and Simmons looks to be the biggest benefactor.
Recovering Joe Skeptic, but inching towards a relapse.

  • GOT IT!!!
The Simmons hype is pretty funny. People want so bad for it they just continue to overlook his inability to shoot which is killing his team. This series was all about the Embiid/Horford matchup and Horford's impact has been much more influential.

I think he misspoke hearing it in contest and with him following up with 3 of the 4 best players in the East (which is what I think he was getting at and what I believe Cowherd thought he was saying)
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Rofl, what a ridiculous take. Simmons isn’t even a top 10 eastern player, lol.

LeBron
Giannis
Kyrie
Embiid
DeRozan
Wall
Beal
Horford
Oladipo
Drummond
Kristaps
Blake Griffin

Those guys are all ahead of him right now off the top of my head. Even if he meant remaining it doesn’t make sense
