Good news is the max for his upcoming contract is going to be roughly $188 over 5 years.

$37.6 million per year is a ton for a guy who isn’t particularly durable.  The problem is that there aren’t a lot of great options that don’t include a huge financial risk.

And the problem is that we have a nice option playing in the playoffs rn that doesn't include a huge financial risk.

Kyrie is much better than Rozier, though. Who are we trading Kyrie for? If it’s for a max player like Kawhi, the financial risk is there.

If we’re paying $16 plus million for Rozier, there’s still a lot of risk, because you’re paying roughly 15% - 20% of the cap to a guy who is your 5th or 6th best player.

But, yes Kyrie is absolutely worth a max contract. Without question.

This comment makes no sense. Are you telling us you think the top players should be paid less?

If so, that's a bizarre take. Many of the top players would actually fetch even larger contracts in a completely open market. And that aside, if you further limited max contracts all you would be doing is shifting the amount of money the players are guaranteed, in aggregate, to lesser talented players.

Do you really want to pay the top players in the league less just so you have to pay more for lesser talented players?

Yeah, the top salaries aren’t the issue.

The luxury tax is arguably too punitive, and in an ideal world there would be a mechanism to get guaranteed money off your books (while still paying the player).  The stretch provision is useless if your $200 million player suffers a career-limiting (but not ending) injury in year one.

I could be in the minority but I dont think there should be max contracts at all. I think there should be a hard cap and teams can spend it how they wish. If somebody wants to give Lebron 90 mil a year because he is "the best player in the world" let them, but I dont see how somebody like Lebron should be getting the same 'max' contract as a guy like DeMar Derozen. You want to spen 90mil for lebron fine, now you have 110 mil for the rest of your roster. Let teams spend what they want for any given player  and force them to work the rest of their roster accordingly if they want to give a guy crazy money.

Except the caps are in place to protect the owners from themselves in a completely open market. Years ago, teams could offer just about anything they wanted to a player once attaining their Bird rights. Owners were giving out massive cash and due to the fact that the television contracts sucked as compared to today, like half the owners claimed to be losing money on the operational end of the business. Big money.

The current CBA, which is just its current iteration, is there to protect owners from overspending. Its there to protect small market teams from just being outspent by larger market teams. Its there to allow teams to hold onto their drafted players as long as possible. And its there to give all NBA players, not just the stars, an exceptional salary.

I think that's just the risk you run with almost any player getting a max deal. Sure you feel better about some players than others but all it takes is one season for a guy to become an injury concern. (Kawhi)

Theoretically the Celtics can keep all their players if they are willing to pay the luxury tax, including Kyrie, Rozier and Smart.  If we make it to the NBA finals, chances are better that management will try to keep everyone. If we get blown out by the Cavs, I think trades are more likely, because ownership will be less willing to pay high taxes.

Yes, he's worth it and I pay it. We are talking about Kyrie Irving. In a matter of weeks, we have all forgotten how insanely good he is.

The hype around Rozier is getting too crazy.  That he's nearly a completely different player on the road than he is at home in these playoffs should tell you something.  I like Terry, but on most any other team he would be an average (at best) starting PG.

If charging an extra $2 to all food/drinks/merchandise means we can pay a great luxury tax and keep Kyrie, Smart AND Rozier, I'm all for it!

Heres a weird take..

I think if we somehow manage to knock off "The King" but lose in the finals... I think KI, being the cerebral guy that he is, Will want his protege to remain in place...

 I can actually see him choosing to not break these young Celtics up...  I don't know how at home Irving would feel on a team that he thought didn't really need him... 

I am not saying he would be pouty at all.. Just saying maybe he feels like the odd man out at this point.

Remember, he was traded here...  The Celtics were not on his wish list...
