Now Lue was clearly joking and I don't think anyone honestly believes James was "point shaving" the first 3 quarters, but is that something a head coach should really be joking about.  I mean basketball has a history of point shaving and it just seems like poor form.

It's harmless & quite apparent the comment was made in tongue.

Lue's coaching is more offensive than his historical references to league gambling issues.

Seems like it's been a while since there's been a big sports gambling incident.

Tim Donaghy in '07 seems like an eternity ago, but before that in the '80's and '90's it seemed like there were constant incidents.

Several NCAA basketball point shaving scandals (BC '79, Tulane '85, Arizona State '94, Northwestern '95)
Art Schlichter in the '80's
Pete Rose in '89
Michael Jordan in the '90s
BC football in '96

Since sports gambling isn't really on the public's mind at the moment, probably not a big deal, but if it was I could see more of a backlash.

I remember reading Charles Barkley's first book Outrageous years ago.  When he was with Philly he was talking trash with Mark Jackson (then on the Knicks) during the '89 playoffs, and he said something like "I bet you $10k I'll make this next shot."  Then the next day David Stern called Barkley up and said you can't do that.  Barkley said they were obviously not serious, but Stern said plenty of fans could hear it and what if Barkley had an open teammate, and they thought he took a bad shot because of the bet with Jackson, yada, yada, yada.  But that was fresh off of the Pete Rose story.

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

I suppose you could see it in the college game again.  18 year/19 year old "amateurs" can be wild cards.

I'd be shocked if you saw something at the professional level now, though.  These guys make way too much money now to really be influenced to do something like that.  A guy might try & throw something out of spite but is a player who is making $10M a year going to point shave for an extra 50K or 100K?  Almost certainly not and I doubt there is someone out there with the capital that is foolish enough to offer someone 50M or something insane to throw a game.   That person would have to spread the bets so far around because of the money involved, it's almost impossible to conceive.

Yeah, it’s a little controversial.  Not a lot, but a little.

Of curious, what Lue is really saying is that Bron can do pretty much what he wants out there.  Dude is top 3 all time and in the discussion of GOAT.
