According to Steve Bulpett:

Quote
According to one NBA source, it is within the Celtics’ right to levy punishment, possibly matching a suspension to the number of games Smart is forced to miss with the injury/quote]

Should the team discipline Smart? To what extent?

How does that decision, either way, impact the teams negotiations with Smart regarding his contract?

If the team suspends him, it is my understanding that it costs Smart 1/110th of his salary per game. I believe that would be $41K per game.

Can we fine him $100K, is that allowed by the CBA? That would be equivalent to 2 /12 games or so suspension, without actually losing him for those games.

If we do that, I think that's what I'd do.

Quote
"Players are not paid while they are suspended -- for each missed game, the player is docked 1/110 of his salary, whether suspended for a preseason, regular season or postseason game. If a player is suspended by his team, then all of his salary continues to count as team salary. If the player is suspended by the league, then only 50% of the salary lost due to the suspension is counted as team salary."

i guess i am late to the party, but i am not sure exactly what took place and actions he took that would warrant such punishment. any links to that please?

without that info it impossible to reckon whether or not any sort of punishment will change his behavior. since a suspension harms the team ainge et al will think carefully about this.

Sit at home and watch the professionals play. Maybe he could be the water boy for a few games and while they're playing and he's not he has to address players as "sir."

Was the injury his fault? I assume it was by the way this is being handled.

Yes, he is hurting the team by his actions. They could have used him last night against GS. Can't allow your players to go around acting like overgrown children when they get angry.

TP....like the idea.

Proposed it in the first thread on Smart's injury.

Hey, look at the bright side.

Regardless of how and why got hurt, he'll cost us less to resign.

He just cost himself a bunch of money (if it wasn't an accident).

Marcus for 10-12 for 5 years is palatable to me.

Or trade him right now for 'Reke, and use the DPE on a buyout like Monroe.

Yes. He punched a picture frame.

I'm in favor of punishing him because he has a history of punching things. Fortunately this time, it only resulted in lacerations. Next time, he could do some real damage and miss significant time. He wants the big contract, time to grow up.

somehow i think part of the 2 weeks "recovery" time is already a punishment. I don't know how severe the laceration is, but i don't think it'll take the entire 2 weeks. I think possibility a week for the wound to close, and another week to punish him?

Depending on how deep it is, it could be two weeks. And one of the reports mentioned multiple lacerations.

lol I second this.  He is punishing himself enough for FA already, mainly with the poor shooting.  No need to add more because of a dumb mistake.

The Golden st game shows how much we need Smart to beat the Warriors. His elite defense would have slowed Curry down some. You don't want to punish a guy that you want to resign.
Once you are labeled 'the best' you want to stay up there, and you can't do it by loafing around.
