Nice to see but any poll having both Laker rooks ranked top 3 a week ago is lame.

Tatum is only scratching the surface. Wait until he REALLY learns all the tricks and grows into his frame. He'll be bigger and stronger next year so those flips at the rim will be dunks.

Folks we have a superstar on our hands and he's untradeble. Sit back and enjoy.

I'd say it's a 4 man race for ROY. Simmons, Kuzma, Mitchel, and Tatum. If Tatum is playing similar minutes (30 mpg as a starter) and his is the only team to make the playoffs (which would be the case as of right now) how heavily will voters weigh that in their decision making?

The other big question is Tatum's continued level of play. Will he slow down as he hits the rookie wall or will he continue to become more aggressive as he continues to get more comfortable? So far he just keeps getting better.

I would hope that they take note of Tatum legitimately contributing to a lot of wins, but who really knows. I think he'll be able to maintain his play hopefully, especially if he can continue his insane efficiency.

But I don't think his stats are gaudy enough to put him ahead of the likes of Simmons or Mitchell
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PG: Terry Porter (90-91) / Steve Francis (00-01)
SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

His efficiency will fall off, but I could see him averaging ~18 points a game post ASB and establishing himself as the #3 player and #2 scoring option on a 55 win team.

I loved Tatum blocking Harden's step back three in clutch time.
Harden has problems with length.

I don't think it's ever weighed heavily, as far as I can recall. Which makes sense, since the best rookies are usually on the worst teams.

I think the difference-maker wouldn't necessarily be his numbers overall, but a few really high-impact performances. Like, we play the Wiz and the Raptors a few times at the end of the year. If he goes for 25 in those games and hits some game-clinching shots on nationally televised games, that could do it.

It's true, record is not usually a big factor in rookie voting. But how often does a rookie this good, have a role this size, on a team winning this much?

Not often.

I wasn't dismissing the idea that it could happen. Just saying we really have no frame of reference.

I did some hunting. Chris Webber won it on a 50-win GSW team (edging out Penny, who was also on a 50-win team). Tim Duncan won, but that was a landslide and deservedly so. Not a lot to go on.

And then of course, there was one year where the only two vote-getters were both on 60-win teams. But we know all about that.

Totally.  It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.

I think there is a lot of things to factor and weigh when it comes to which rookie is "the best". So I think an honorable mention is all one can ask for. I mean what is exactly is the deciding factor when there are dozens of stuff. Just think

What exactly do you value most?
Efficiency and fit.
Total numbers.
Leadership role.
Highlight plays.
Team record.
Position value.
Age.
Last week games vs overall season.
Performance against a top opponent.
Flash/upside single performance.
Playing time.
Clutch moments.
Number of quiet games.
Intangibles.

On an on.... You can use any combination of things for a ranking that gives you very different results as to who is on top.

I actually remember the first year of Paul Pierce, by the second half of the season you just knew he was going to be special. You would see flashes of his dominance...and then regressions for a game or so, just like we're seeing in Tatum.

With a little luck and good health, he'll score 20 points plus a game for years to come.
