Anthony Davis is still the NBA's great big trade obsession

http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/21806622/anthony-davis-nba-great-big-trade-obsession-adrian-wojnarowski

"All Anthony Davis wants to do is win, but where will that happen?"

It's a good read, and a deep article with a lot of insight, quotes, etc. A lot of it talks about how AD takes it hard at times when people think he "isn't a winner" due to not making playoffs at times, and he talks about how life is like with the Pelicans, with Cousins, his goals, etc.

But the part I found interesting in all this was the part about Boston, which Woj actually talks in great detail about. Apparently, the C's were extremely high on trading for AD earlier, and apparently, still are (maybe as the "end goal" next summer?) :o

Here is the bit in the article:

Quote
Davis remains an obsession of several NBA teams full of the necessary trade assets to unfasten him from New Orleans, should the Pelicans ever consider a rebuild --- or should Davis ever request a trade. Boston has remained vigilant on the possibility of acquiring Davis, and Davis knows it. However, the Pelicans have no intention of trading an all-world talent under contract through 2021, no matter the return.

Before the Cousins trade a year ago, though, Davis kept hearing talk of the Celtics trying to trade for him. He walked into GM Dell Demps' office and asked about it.

"He told me that [Boston] was calling, but nothing was going to happen," Davis said. "At the same time, though, you see how organizations treat players. Isaiah Thomas. DeMarcus [Cousins] told me that the [Kings] told him that he wasn't going to get traded, but they traded him. Isaiah took his team to the Eastern Conference finals, and they traded him.

"It makes you wonder: Does this organization really have my back? I've been loyal to this organization. I love it here. I love this team. I think we're moving in the right direction. DeMarcus, Rondo, some other players that are helping us, but people get judged on winning. And I want to win.

"It's not about the money. It's not about having fans. The most important thing to me: winning. That's what I want to do. And I want to do it here."

Honestly, the part about Isaiah Thomas is kind of a bummer. It may have been the right move long-term, but it also brings a lot of question about loyalty and emotions into this (as Jaylen also mentioned earlier in the season). AD mentions it as well here.

Frankly, I've kind of soured on the idea of acquiring AD, as great as he is. The "earliest" we could get him is this summer or next year's deadline (especially if he demands out), but to me, he seems kind of injury prone now, and it will be extremely difficult to match salaries w/o including Horford (and I don't want to trade him away for several reasons). Plus.. NOP will understandably ask for BOTH Jaylen/Tatum, which is a big no-no. Maybe if their price lowers a bit and they only take back Jaylen of the two, then sure, but matching salaries will still be an issue I believe.

Anyways, it was kind of a boring morning and I just came across this article. Thought I'd share. What do you guys think? To me at least, it is telling that the Celtics are STILL looking into the AD sweepstakes, even if that won't be until next summer/season. Ainge's end goal here? Now obviously, as the article states, the Pelicans have zero intention of trading him now (trade deadline), but maybe later on especially if AD might demand out.

The Pelicans are looking like they will make the playoffs this year with the Davis/Cousins combo.   I imagine they will try to re-sign Cousins and continue to try to put solid pieces around them.  I doubt they will try to trade Davis and the price would be extremely high.

It’s not the end of the world if we don’t get him.  We get to keep both Brown and Tatum, and maybe strike gold again in this draft or next for a cost controlled player while keeping Horford.

I was thinking the same about having to include AL in any AD trade. If Al is traded for him I doubt any big FA will sign here without a no-trade clause.
I'm sure AD will get a Gordon Hayward size ovation next time they are in the city though. He knows we know our basketball.

Edit: TP for the post!

Yeah, really hope that Lakers pick conveys. Adding an Ayton or another big in this draft to go along with this youth + Horford, Kyrie, Hayward would be splendid.

And frankly, we need that LAL pick to convey to possibly even be in the discussion for an AD trade this summer lol (depending on how the Pelicans season ultimately goes).

Yep, this exactly. Plus, Al was the first marquee FA signing for this team in franchise history. That does hold some weight, too.

Pelicans should blow it up.

Trade Cousins for BKN pick, Tristan Thompson, Jae Crowder

Trade Davis for Horford, Brown, LAL/SAC pick

Holiday - Rondo
Brown - Moore - Clark
Crowder - Hill
Thompson - Cunningham
Horford - Asik

Probably gives New Orleans a better and more balanced team than what they have now (The Davis/Cousins experiment ain't gonna work) plus two high lottery picks.

Would make the Eastern Conference a whole lot more interesting too!

Imagine Kyrie/Davis/Hayward/Tatum Vs. LBJ/Thomas/Love/Cousins!

I think players have very short memories when it comes to a team's management/ownership.  Track record doesn't matter nearly as much as how they'll be set up for success going forward.

First example I think of is the Clippers.  Everybody knew they had terrible, cheap ownership.  That Sterling was a racist was pretty well known even before his scandal.  None of that mattered once they got Blake Griffin and showed potential going forward.  Chris Paul got traded there and opted in, and later re-signed, then Doc and many vets wanted to go there.

Now I think of Philly and Minnesota.  Nobody wanted to touch Philly for the last 4 years, now they look like a legit up-and-coming force, and now they're seen as a top free agent landing spot.  Similar with Minnesota.  Joke of a franchise, their greatest player in franchise history openly talks about his distaste for ownership, but get some young studs and Jimmy Butler, and suddenly they are able to sign several solid guys.  And now that New York finally looks good again, we'll quickly see the same thing happen there, despite having probably the worst owner in the NBA.

If Davis wants out of New Orleans, it's not going to matter if Boston traded IT or Pierce/Garnett or if they have to trade Horford/Brown/Tatum to do it.  All that's going to matter is if Boston can contend once Davis gets there.

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

Jaylen Brown/Marcus Smart/Marcus Morris/Aron Baynes/Lakers pick

for

Anthony Davis

It is a massive package but what it would likely take to land AD WITHOUT including Tatum (which is ultimately the goal).

This starting 5 can run with any in the NBA...

Irving
Hayward
Tatum
Davis
Horford

Wait, is that Anthony Davis questioning whether Boston would have his back because of the way Ainge dumped Thomas? That's fascinating. TPs for tarheels.

Yeah, I’m in the same boat. AD would be a fine piece to have, but I think it would legitimately cost Al, Tatum, and the LA pick, which just isn’t worth it long-term imo. Right now, Al is the backbone of this team, which is highlighted by the huge disparity in his on/off +/- numbers this season. Tatum has multiple-time/perennial All-Star written all over him, and the LA pick could be just as promising.

So while I doubt any one of those three will end up as good as Davis, cumulatively and long-term they’re worth much more to us I think.

EDIT: Davis’ injury history concerns me, too.

If i was acquiring Davis I'd rather trade Tatum then Brown. We'd need a SG on that team and Brown is better able to play the 2 than Tatum. I don't want Hayward having to stick with quick two guards coming off a devastating injury. Brown has a higher defensive upside than Tatum which matters ALOT against a team like the warriors. Tatum's offense becomes less valuable when he's the 4th option on a team behind Hayward, Irving and Davis. Tatum may be the better over-all player, but I'm not convinced he has a higher upside which I value quite a bit.

The biggest news here is that Ainge has persistently targeted Davis to the point of Demps telling Davis there's been talks. Ainge wants Davis, and he hasn't been just kicking the tires to check Davis' value. Wonder if danny will continue to target AD or if he's moved on.

Its unfortunate that Davis looks at the IT situation in a bad light. Top 5 -10 players aren't shopped around in trades. AD should know this. IT isn't in the same level as AD... There would be no "loyalty lost" if we obtained Davis. Who exactly would we trade Davis for? There's arguably no one better

IT4 who plays absolutely no defense, demanding a brinks truck, and coming off an injury...It's called trading your pieces now.

Why trade for him now? wait for his contract ends and get him for free or when he asked out and steal him like KI (Rozier, Baynes, laker/kings pick for Davis)

He is too glass for me to take it seriously though
