I'm catching up on Zach Lowe's piece from last week where he devotes one of his "Ten Things" to Mario Hezonja being terrible. Even before the end of the piece, I started thinking about the DPE. Here's what Lowe says:

Quote
It's painful to watch a player wriggled so deep inside his own brain you can feel his indecision seeping through the television. Hezonja shoots when he should pass, drives when he should shoot, and sometimes hot-potatoes the ball around the perimeter when he could rise for an open triple.

Against Utah this week, he passed up what would have been a decent 3-point look, drove into the lane with his head down -- without a plan -- and belched up a lefty floater that surely drove Orlando's coaching staff insane.

He remains lost on defense. Frank Vogel yanked Hezonja three minutes into the second quarter of that same game after he blew assignments on three straight possessions. We didn't see him again until garbage time -- and then not at all Wednesday against Minnesota.

Orlando shopped Hezonja everywhere before the Halloween deadline to decide on his $5.2 million option for next season. They wanted to foist that choice onto someone else. They found no takers, and declined the option.

Someone should buy low on Hezonja, begin again from scratch, and see if they can mold him into an NBA player. He's 6-8 with some hops, and he can shoot. That's an interesting foundation.

Hezonja had a ton of hype after the draft and was picked 5th. He's amounted to basically nothing so far in the NBA but if there aren't a ton of other attractive options out there, anyone want to see what Stevens and his staff can do with this kid?

Quite the downward trend.

While a coach like Stevens might be good for him, I don't see where it really helps the Celtics.   They have 6 rookies already.   They have three other key guys still on their rookie contracts.   They don't need another development player.   They need a vet or two for the dog days of the season slump and the playoffs.   Someone who can help pick up the young guys.

Assuming no better options become available down the road, I'd take a flyer on him with our DPE. Way too early to tell though. I think we will wait until the buyout deadline before we use the DPE.

By the way, there is already a thread about Hezonja.

And wouldn't you know, it's in the forum I should've put this thread in.

Stevens can't coach up or develop every player. James Young, Jordan Mickey, RJ Hunter are all examples of this. Some players just don't have "it". From what I have seen of Herzonja, he doesn't have "it". I would pass.

This, the guy was a reach at 5. I can't remember what the consensus thought was on him at the time of the draft but he seemed like a stretch in the lottery.

I'd rather take a flyer on McDermott instead.

To me, it makes no sense to use the DPE on a reclamation project that will take time to "reclaim".  I think the DPE should be used on a player who can help right away, this season.  That is the original purpose of the rule, after all.

Totally agree with Surferdad. Plus in order to "reclaim" there must have been something to begin with. As far as I can see he has been a total bust since day 1 so there is nothing to reclaim.

I think Stevens could get him to pass the eye test but his advanced numbers will still be bad.  I think his ceiling is a fool's gold trade chip and I was really up on him when he was drafted.

I'd rather take a flyer on Okafar.   Hezonja was more hype than good.
