Was there any possible way to keep Avery Bradley?

I know he was moved to clear way for Gordon and because of his upcoming asking price next year.

Let me ask though, operating under the idea that he would have been willing to work something out with us.... could we have kept him? AB on a slight discount sounds like something he very well might do, he was a pure Celtic.

If that was the case, surely we could have moved a combo of Smart and Rosier who just aren't as talented right? Just move other guys to get it done?

How does paying him effect our cap moving forward when Kyrie is up etc?

If nothing else it's not like a player like him was going to lose value, we could always move him later.

I like Marcus Morris quite a bit, I just wish our other rotation guards weren't such poor shooters.

Not sure who would have come back for Smart/Rozier, but right now you're roster move is Morris, Smart and Rozier for Bradley.   Not good.

I loved AB while he was here and I think his work ethic was stellar and he seemed like he was probably a great teammate.   I think he was a rung below "borderline all-star" last year.  But, I like Smart AND Morris on this team more than I like AB on this team.   The 6'3" and 6'7" starting backcourt doesn't happen if Avery is here.  I hate to say this, but I don't miss Avery Bradley.

If I’m not mistaken, Hayward would have been the one that needed to give a discount first.  Trading Avery for Morris gave us just enough money to sign Hayward to the max.  Without that trade, we don’t get Hayward.

There was a possible way indeed. It would have meant trading someone else, but I think the only options would have been:

1) Marcus and Demetrious

2) Terry and Jaylen

Sure we'd have needed to give up one of Crowder/Smart though. Even just dumping Rozier wouldn't have given us enough space iirc.

Avery was not going to take a discount.. He had already signed a discounted deal - he even fired his agent behind it... No way was he going to take another discounted deal...

Certainly we could have kept Bradley and made a different deal to clear salary instead, but presumably the return received for Bradley was the best.

That said, I doubt Bradley would have taken much, if any, discount.  I think he’s going to get paid a ton of money this summer by either Detroit or Philly, and there would have been no way Boston could have afforded even 80% of what he’ll ultimately get.  He’s a great player and person, and I wish him all the best.  I hope he get a huge ovation when he return to Boston in two weeks.

He's doing a great job for the Pistons. I really liked Bradley but the writing was on the wall. To compete with the Cavs the Celtics had to add talent. The addition of talent like Hayward meant Avery wouldn't get the pay day he would desire at Boston. I would have liked him to stay a Celtic but it wasn't going to work with the young players who have a higher ceiling.

Avery Bradley was a key player for us, and an absolute god send. I'm really going to miss him. I loved watching his defensive intensity, and how much scared opposing point guards would look when being guarded by him, lol. (Looking at you Jameer Nelson!)

But like others said, writing was on the wall, Bradley was going to eventually get the contract that he wanted and most likely at least get a fat check. I can see 18-20 million range for him, or maybe a little more, with bonus incentives. And in order to build a strong team, you can't be paying players like Bradley unless you already have the championship roster built. Bradley is your 3rd option on a really good team.

I would wager the option of getting rid of Smart, or Crowder was on the table. But Crowder wasn't going to leave, because of his useful bargain bin contract, and Rozier wouldn't even have made an difference cap wise.

That said, on an only slightly related note, really happy to see AB having success in Detroit.  He seems to really be showing the world how valuable he is, and he has single handedly transformed that team.  He's one of those guys who no matter where he goes, I'm always going to wish him the best of luck. 

No matter what jersey he might wear at any given time, he's a Celtic though and through.
