From 1950 up until a few years ago, the C's have always had a team captain. Here is the full list.

1950-63    Bob Cousy
1963-69    Bill Russell
1969-78    John Havlicek
1978-80    Dave Cowens
1980-92    Larry Bird
1992-93    Reggie Lewis
1993-94    Robert Parish
1994-95    Dee Brown and Dominique Wilkins
1995-96    Dee Brown
1996-97    Rick Fox
1997-98    Dee Brown, Pervis Ellison, Antoine Walker
1998-99    Antoine Walker
1999-00    Antoine Walker and Dana Barros
2000-03    Antoine Walker and Paul Pierce
2003-13    Paul Pierce
2014         Rajon Rondo

Would you want the C's to name a team captain? If so, who should get the nod? Given that it's common for teams to have more than 1 captain (sometimes up to 3), feel free to vote for up to 3 players.

For the record, CBS has already said that the we won't name a captain this season.

"We won't name a captain. We'll have leaders. They'll all come to the front. We all want all 15 guys to take ownership in being authentic leaders. As I've said before, I think the biggest thing is that sometimes when you name a captain or name a few captains, you can disempower others as much as you empower captains."

I voted Horford as well as he is a veteran and not leaving any time soon. I would have voted Smart but there is no guarantee that he is here after this year. I don't think you can vote a captain from a new player or rookie so that is my reasoning.

I like that Stevens dosen't have Captains. Guys who you don't think about will step up from time to time. Everyone is responsible at all times. This way one guy doesn't have to carry and can play to their strengths.

Irving leads on the floor, sets the pace offensively. Horford is the calm collective guy, the old wise man. Hayward(will) lead by example on the floor. Smart the defensive/hustle leader. Morris,Baynes enforcers. Brown and Tatum the young guy leaders.

They all have their strengths and can lean on each other win games get tight.

Has to be Horford.

Even tempered, respected, sets the example and more.

The only other people I would even consider are Smart for his heart or Kyrie for his scoring dominance.

Neither has Horfords leadership at this stage of their career.

I voted None.  I don't think any player warrants getting the C right now.  Horford is a natural choice but he has only been on the team 1.1 seasons; that just doesn't seem long enough.  Smart would actually be a great choice in terms of style of play and willingness speak out but he is just a sixth man right now.

I am with Brad, let it play out.  We don't need a captain.  When the situation is right, then name someone.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Horford would have made a great captain if he were named last year or this year, but I am not exactly sure about his future after the 18-19 season and that would only give him 1-2 years of being captain.

For this reason, I selected Kyrie. With him only being 25 and very likely here for the next decade or so, it only makes sense. He will have a year under his belt as the 'best player' for a thriving franchise and he was also and integral part of a championship before he got here. He seems to be taking to his role as a leader very seriously and this year is a great try-out for him in that role as he continues to develop.

I believe Brad said he did not want a captain.
I agree.
Brad is the only captain we need.

Whoever is the hardest worker with the best results, with the most dues, and is the biggest overachiever. On the Patriots for a while that was easily guys like Izzo, Slater, Bruschi, Tom, Troy Brown.

That would lead us in the direction of Larkin, possibly Jaylen, Baynes, and that's about it.

We don't really need captains. Our best players aren't really leaders, and our leaders aren't really that good.

Gordan H if he were healthy.

Horford is my number ONE choice.
Kyrie Irving is my number TWO.
Jayson Tatum is my number THREE.

Our enforcers are Aron Baynes, Marcus Morris, and Marcus Smart. Whenever fights/scuffles break out, expect to see them shoving back, chest bump, throwing punches and having their teammates' backs.
