aircraft aluminium is super super rigid , to make a bathtube size gash would be more than any known bird today , and besides birds don't fly at 30,000.

Already covered in the NBA trivia thread for some strange reason.  Bird strikes can cause that kind of damage to nose cones which are made of softer composite materials. 

A few bird species can fly that high.  Besides it is not even clear when it happened.  It could have happened during the descent.

Adams commented "rough flight" but I think that was just a humorous comment to match the picture.   No indication that any players were aware of impact when whatever happened happened.
