All this talk about Smart's next contract being comparable to Andre Roberson leads me to this stat above all else. Career FT %

Smart 76%
Roberson 48%

No matter how good you are on defense, you will never be on the floor in crunch time of you are a liability at the FT line.
Either Roberson is overpaid or Marcus will be paid more. One of those is definite.

For additional fun... Cheers to Roberson for having the first back to back airball FTs of the year

I don't think there's much doubt that Smart is better than Roberson, the question is how much better. Roberson has better size than smart bu nowhere ear the ball distribution ability. i also think Smart has a higher ceiling, hes still only 23 while Roberson is 25. Roberson got 10 mill a year, I'd max Smart out at 4/52. He might find  team to give him more than that, maybe not in this new tighter money market. Either way more than that for a guy who is currently a one way player and you are talking about a possible bad contract. We shall see this summer.

I think if Smart doesn't lock it in from the three point range then he will be traded by the break.  Jabari Bird will take his place.

This post is not a troll.  Im sick of smart not making his shots.

Troll or not I do think your way off in your evaluation. Don't see Bird being a factor in this team's long term planning for Smart.

I'm still confident he'll be here long term but no way he's moved mid season.

That's like saying, "if Jaylen's average PPG is less than 15 by the break, trade him"...  ::)

Smart is miles better as an offensive player, despite his poor shooting%. Dude can post up, hit FTs and facilitate offense.

Kentucky could look good against the Knicks if the Knicks went on the road to play them

By any measure, smart is a terrible offensive player.  So I would not call him miles better than anyone offensively.  In fact, smarts problem is that he is too involved in the offense.  He’d be more helpful if he did less.

And Hayward. Trade them both.

smart just may be who he is offensively. Pre-season was an illusion it seems as smart is back to his 37% FG and 31% 3 point shooting ways of last season.

I just wish he wouldnt be so eager to go ISO ball with that sort of % when we have Kyrie Irving on the court.

4 games = illusion
2 games = enough proof?

Can we wait at least until he plays in 10 games?  I'd much prefer 20, but are we really judging his shooting based on two freaking games? (and no, "he's always shot poorly" doesn't mean this two game sample is enough, he's always been streaky as hell so two games is really not enough)
I'm bitter.

It's not at all like that.

Marcus Smart is in a contract year and the Celtics aren't going to resign him period.  It makes the most sense to trade him and try to get value for a former lottery pick.

The simple fact is that the Celtics aren't going to pay luxury tax to resign a bench player.  They still have to think about upcoming renegotiations for Jaylen Brown and Terry Rozier plus signing future draft picks.
