Is there a deadline by which the exception must be applied for, or else it is voided?  If not, wouldn't the best course to be to wait until January, see how Hayward is progressing, then declare him out?

Then use that exception to make a move at the deadline to bring on a talented vet with an expiring contract.

Why do they have to do this now.

The deadline to apply for the exception is January 15th.  That said, they have already applied for it.  Hayward would not be ineligible to return during the season if the Celtics are awarded it — indeed, he still takes up one of the 15 roster spaces regardless.  League doctors would just have to find it likely that he misses the rest of the season — where that is on their scale of 51-100 percent probability, I don’t know. But if they think he’s likely to miss, and Hayward beats the odds and returns, that’s okay.

So there’s no drawback to seeking the exception now — if they’re awarded it, they don’t need to use it immediately.  So might as well have it as an option as early as possible, even if they ultimately use it solely to take on an expiring contract and a second round pick from a team looking to lower their tax bill.

Isn't Derrick Favors/Joe Johnson both on an expiring contracts at around $12m? I wouldn't mind trading for either and keeping them.

I dont think we will use the exception, when morris and smart come back we still have a pretty deep team and since this season now is more about development, than actual win total I dont see a player that would help and is even available under the circumstances.

Would love to have Joe Johnson, he's making $11m this year and is an expiring contract, but hasn't people already said the exception can not be more than 8m?

Yes, the exception is limited to the value of the mid-level exception (~$8.5 million this year), and it cannot be combined with outgoing salary

Here are some of the rules on how the Disabled Player Exception can be used:
  • We need to apply for it no later than January 15th and use it no later than March 15th.
  • It's about $8.4 million (up to $8.5 million if used in a trade) and can only be used on one player who makes less than that
  • It can be used to sign or trade for a player as long as that player is in the last year of his deal with no options of any kind after this year
  • It cannot be combined with another player to trade for a player who makes more than $8.4 million
  • Applying for it/using it does not mean Hayward can't return this year

Put me in the Will "the Thrill" Barton's camp. I think he'd fit in well here and is on the last year of his contract making $3,533,333.

I think this Trade exception is due diligence. If we got Barton or any other seemingly available veteran, it would take the ball out of our young guys hands (Smart, Rozier, Brown, Tatum). What we can get for that money is not a significant enough upgrade to limit our young guy's development, especially in a year where we are given to opportunity to develop the young guys.

The exception is a resource, an opportunity, or another tool in Danny's arsenal, even if he doesn't use it. If there is another injury to a veteran (Baynes or Horford), I can see us making a move to get a veteran big who can run the pick-and-roll with Irving. Otherwise, I think the exception probably eventually just expires.

I mentioned someone like Josh McRoberts in another thread.  I'd much rather go the veteran big route than a veteran wing or guard.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

  • Wayne Ellington
  • Michael Beasley (3 months from when he signed with NYK)

I agree. None of the players out there would really move the needle for us and would probably just take away from letting our young guys develop. However, it could be useful if another rotation player were to be injured/lost for an extended period or if we were to make a midseason trade that affected our rotation/depth.

I do think McRoberts would be a good fit, but can he play C? I'd like us to use the last roster spot on someone that can help if Horford or Baynes have to miss time.  I feel better about our situation at PF (even though it's a lot of small ball) than I do about our Cs (plus having another C that deserves time would push Al to play at the 4 more, making the team a little bigger)

Edit: If we can get him for nothing (or next to nothing, say a couple of second rounders), I'd actually be pretty interested in bringing in Okafor

TP for your work in making the list. I am starting to like the idea of McRoberts.

1.  We won't be able to get him for nothing.  As bad as he is there will be some team out there who will outbid us because the most I see us giving up is a protected 2nd round pick.
2.  Okafor would be a bad fit because he stinks at defense, isn't a rebounder, and can't space the floor.  He is the opposite of the bigs that the Celtics would like to have.
3.  I'm so over Okafor maybe so should you.

It's tough to find a good modern 5.  Most teams who have them won't be looking to deal them.  Jokic isn't stepping through that door.  And in our wildest dreams Anthony Davis isn't arriving but if he does, that would be the answer we are looking for.
