How much will Marcus Smart get in new contract?

 If Josh Richardson is getting Four-Year, $42M, what will Marcus Smart get for a new contract? I think he's got to be at least 4 years 50 million.

My guess. 4 Years/56M.

May be hefty, but come on, look at the NBA contracts these days.

Also, maybe it's just me, but I think Smart will surprise us this season in some way and take a step up. Not saying he's going to average like 25 PPG or anything, but not crazy to imagine him averaging 13-15 PPG? With IT and Bradley now both out, he could have a bit of a bigger role this season, and he did work really hard this off season (although of course, it all depends on what he shows in the court this season).

And with Crowder gone, Smart is probably the lone 'bulldog' in the house (along with Morris I guess), and we need those kind of players too in the long run.

As Brad Stevens says many times, Smart can have zeroes all through his stat lines some games, but ultimately he makes "winning plays" late, and that is a player you'd love to have. Hustles, gritty, and probably our version of Draymond to be honest.

4 yrs / $40M and he should be pretty psyched with that.

I very much hope we find a way to keep Smart. Trading IT and AB away means that he is now our only expiring (Baynes, too, I know); we also used the #6 pick on him so we want him to succeed.

That being said, I don't think there are going to be many additional scoring opportunities for him this year and I doubt he will get more than the 30mpg he got last year. With Hayward more than making up for AB's points, Kyrie, Baynes, and Morris picking up where IT, Amir, and Crowder left off, and Brown/Tatum getting more meaningful minutes, the only thing Smart can hope for is increased efficiency. While it is almost impossible for that not to happen in some capacity, I don't think it will translate to a monstrous paycheck.

Defensive guards have never been paid a premium and with the money beginning to dry up - along with a number of good FAs on the market - I don't think this will bode well for Smart...I mean, well enough, but not the ridiculous contracts we have recently seen.

Smart won't have to take so many of those late shot clock heaves this year( that killed his %s) with Kyrie and Hayward on board. Morris and Tatum will also chuck up those shots. Last year many players (Kelly, I'm looking at you...)were very reluctant to take those last minute bad shots so it fell to Marcus to just chuck it up. Sometimes it looked like a game of hot potato at the end of the quarter and the end of the clock. Smart will play a much more complementary role this year with the rise of talent on the team. I hope Danny locks him up before the season starts...

Late into free agency this year was the beginning of a major contract reset for players. The silly money of the new Television deal is over. If Smart was signing last year he would be $20m per  year... a bit better than KO and ET. Next offseason however, I don't see him getting more than $15m per year on the open market and $14m to stay with us.

Statistically, he's pretty terrible. 

According to the eye test, he's a bit of a loose cannon but has an undeniable ability to make big plays and change games. 

I have no idea what he's worth.  I'm not smart enough to reconcile those two pieces into a single number... never mind adjusting that number for a cap climate that is currently in flux.

I agree w/ I believe KOC that Roberson is a good comp, but Smart has the ability to run backup point, increasing his value.  Plus he occasionally gets hot from outside.

On the other hand, very few teams will have cap space next season, dampening his value.

So maybe 4 / $45 million?  4 / $50 million tops?

Marcus is averaging 30 min per game and his per36 averages are 12.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, 5.5 assists.  He's an elite defender and can play 3 positions.  He was the #6 overall pick of his draft.  He is thought of pretty highly around the league based on the ESPN Top 100 rankings.  Let's look at the free agents this offseason who were most similar to Marcus.

Otto Porter Jr just got 4 years, $104. 
Andre Roberson just got 3 years, $30. 
James Johnson got 4 years, $60. 
Olynyk got 4 years, $50.
Dion Waiters got 4 years, $52.
Tim Hardaway Jr got 4 years, $72.
Tony Snell got 4 years, $46.
KCP got 1 year, $18.
Patty Mills got 4 years, $50.
Jeff Teague and George Hill each got 3 years, $57.
Jrue Holiday got 5 years, $125.

Everybody's opinions vary, but I'd say out of Marcus + those 12 guys, that Marcus probably ranks somewhere around 4th-5th.

I'd expect him to get signed to a RFA offer sheet somewhere around 4 years, $70 mil (+/- $10 mil) if we do not reach an agreement with him.

I see at least 8 teams that will have $18+ mil of cap space next offseason.  I feel that rebuilding teams like Brooklyn, Utah, or Philly would love to pry him from us.

I think this is a mistake a lot of people seem to be making.  All those deals signed under 2016 and 2017 can't be repeated.  Players aren't going to get those contracts again.  Those dollars are gone.  Teams don't have cap room anymore, especially not for non-superstar players.  Here's an article from ESPN talking about it.

Summer of 2016: 27 teams were under the cap, 60 players signed with cap space.
Summer of 2017: 14 teams were under the cap, 22 players signed with cap space.
Summer of 2018: 9 teams will be under the cap per ESPN, (though other sources predict even less, Real GM says only 5 for example).

"Nuclear winter," or summer, is probably a bit apocalyptic. Nevertheless, the consensus among several team executives was that the market correction would continue into next offseason. In particular, they projected the market to be tighter for the NBA's middle class in a star-studded free-agency crop.

"Free agents will get squeezed," a general manager said.

"What I see all the time is players not understanding why, 'This player got this, but I get that?' They want it to make sense and it just doesn't make sense. I think you'll see a lot of agents get fired.

"The top guys will always feed first and then the year of the cap spike, there was a lot left for everybody else to feed. Next year, the top players will still get theirs, and then there will be not much left."

Some agents, projecting plenty of frustrated clients in the near future, are second-guessing the union for creating this situation by not working with the NBA on cap smoothing.

"It forced teams to spend all their money and gave free agents false hope of what's to come," one agent said.

"If you weren't a free agent last summer, those deals aren't ever going to come again. ... They f---ed everybody. They f---ed the teams and f---ed the players."
