Noel would have to accept far less than he's reported to want to make that work.. and then we'd have a hard cap for the rest of the season. All for a guy no team in the league seems to be interested in...
I don't think this is correct. If you like Noel, you
don't make him an offer, because Dallas will match. You instead hope that he'll sign his qualifying offer and you can get him next year. That he hasn't signed doesn't mean a team isn't interested -- they just think Dallas would match any reasonable offer they could give Noel, so they either get to grossly overpay him (I personally think Dallas matches at least $20 mil per year) or wait for a year.
Also, the Celtics are so far below the hard cap that this is not a concern this season. It would take 3 significant trades to get them close to the apron level.
