Who'd have thought that adjusting to a completely different way of playing basketball would take a bit of time.

Didn't stop the boo-birds on here from calling him a bust after two summer league games.

how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck was chris bosh?

TP for the article and first answer, he'll find his role in a completely new environment, style of play, system, teammates, language, society, etc.

Hey, but after 10 minutes of Summer League we can freely say that choosing him over Labissiere was a terrible, awful, deadly, flunking, puking mistake.

Sometimes I love these forums. Let the kid play and don't show your limited intelligence judging people too early.

Good thoughts here, fellas.

Given some coaching and, most of all, acclimation time, Zizic will do just fine.

Yeah, truly.

The kid is burning up to play. I'm glad he's a Celtic.

2 things from the article:

Quote
The adjustment hasn't come immediately. Zizic has played on a tape delay at times, struggling to keep up on the perimeter, reacting a stop slow with his help defense, looking very much like a 20-year-old adapting to a new environment.

"Tape delay" is a good description. He's thinking the game way too much and when he gets to the NBA, everything will be faster and he'll be doing even more thinking. But that'll come with time and professional reps.

Quote
"After training camp I will be ready 100 percent for this style of game. And of course there's a lot of -- here, they prefer a game of 1-on-1. And I'll find my role."

He's right about summer league being more 1-on-1 but it will be the complete opposite in the NBA, which is going to fit his skillset a lot better. He's not going to be posting up in the NBA like I've seen in some of these summer league highlights. He's going to be rolling to the rim 10 times a night. If he can continue to finish at the rim and make a decent number of free throws, his offense is going to look a lot better in the NBA than it does in SL.

Frankly, he just needs to learn to play within his limitations, and do a great job of boxing out. That is really all we need from a back up big for this team.

I have tempered my expectation that he someday could be Al Horford's replacement as our starting big. Just can't picture that ever occurring.

I'd like to see a few Jaylen pick and pops... Test out his 15 footer a little more

Certainly the adjustment curve is a steep one for him, and he shows ample evidence that he's a worker.

Also, despite the reaction of fans, he has shown some assets in his brief SL career - he's relentless, he can catch a pass, he can finish through contact, he's coachable, he even seems to have good handles for a center.

But fans should temper their optimism, and my reasons were already evident in his Euro career. Why?

1) His body.

a) He has long legs. Not a problem once he gets moving in a straight line; when he eventually gets a feel for when he's got to change ends he'll be known as a big who runs the floor - the breakdowns in this area in SL are something that he can and will likely minimize in the future.  The limitation comes in when he's got to move laterally, or close out - anything, really, where he has change locations quickly; it just takes something to move all that leg.

b) He has stiff hips and shoulders.  To some extent this can be overcome with focused, regular work.  But he's got a LONG way to go, and when you add that to the leg length issues it's hard to see him playing a big role in the coming season.

c) He has an extremely flexor-dominated body.  Again this is something that steady, focused work can impact - but this will be a really slow process. This bias affects his ability to get off the floor and to accelerate - and again exacerbates the issue of leg-length.

2) He is a black hole. He has almost zero history of making plays for other guys.  He certainly has made some attempts in SL, mostly with cringe-worthy results. That Boston has had an offense with Danny and Brad that runs stuff through bigs argues against his getting meaningful minutes next year (but see below).

I've said in the past that he was an NBA player and could be a regular rotation player - but not on the Celtics.

Things have changed though, haven't they? There are roster and even rotation spots for bigs that are ready and waiting for whatever low-salary guys can step forward and hold their own on an NBA court. In my opinion, Zizic playing rotation minutes in the coming season is likely to be a disaster for the Celtics - but given the opportunities available, I would not now rule it out.

You never know. He's still only 20 and I think his game will look better in the NBA than it does in summer league. With that in mind, is it possible he winds up better than Tristan Thompson or Steven Adams? I think it's possible.

I don't know if Zizic will ever be a big time starter, but this post made me think.

What if he was on the 76'ers instead? He would never get any better being surrounded by a bunch of young guys who are clueless and losing.

At least he is here and is playing with people who want to win and know how.

Kid wants to be good...that's a start.

Well, he had a 24/26 per 36 line tonight.
