So, Joel Embiid is clearly a franchise talent with out-of-this-world talent.  That much is obvious.

But, as we all know, his health is a HUGE red flag going forward.  It is a major concern for the 76ers. He has only played in 13% of his games in 3 years.

At the end of the 2017-18 NBA season, Embiid will be a RFA.  If you are the 76ers, what do you do?

He's going to get max money whether he is healthy or not.  This just goes to show how immense his talent is.  Pretty much no other player would be in consideration to earn a max contract with this type of injury history.

Do you give him the max extension right now, or do you wait until the offseason?

Hypothetically, if he were to play in less than 50% of the games this season, do you still give him the max contract?

Trying to get some perspective on this Embiid dilemma, and also see some different front office philosophies my fellow Celticsbloggers believe.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Without a doubt I let him play out the year before signing him to his next contract. The Sixers can just match another team's offer so there is no harm in doing that.

To give him a 5-yr max, I would hope he plays at least 50 games, but it also would depend on the type and severity of injury that keeps him out. Anything recurring/serious would give me pause, but, as you stated, the franchise altering talent is there.

They just need to find a way to keep him relatively healthy.

He's restricted, so what's the risk to them in waiting? They won't lose him in the meantime, and they have to spend the $$ somewhere. Philly has next to nothing committed to salaries next year and they have to get to ~$90 million minimum salaries. Even if Fultz and Simmons hit it big, they've got them cheap for years to come.

Unless they can get Lebron and PG to bring the LA party to Philly, who are they spending their $$ on otherwise? Their best bet will be to gamble on Embiid, even if he has issues yet again next season.

Although, I think it's a safe bet NJN are going to force everyone to pay decent RFAs the max for the foreseeable future.

Yeah, there really is no risk in waiting.

How many games would you need to see from him?

Great point about the Nets as well.  It must stink to be them.  ;D

50 seems like a fair number.

If it is his feet/knees then I would be very hesitant as well.

Those issues, historically, don't just disappear.

I would not feel comfortable giving him max money. It's not the NFL. If he gets max money and then continues his injury history, he handcuffs whatever franchise he signed with.

They have the $ but I think you wait so you can maybe recruit more FAs.

Trade him now. Not paying him. Do not believe he can stay healthy.

If he's healthy, he's a Hall-of-Fame talent, so you build around him. However, you probably hold off on maxing him out until he hits RFA.
Isaiah, you were lightning in a bottle.

Roll the dice and hope you can keep him healthy for a few good playoff runs.

He will get a max contract no matter how many games he sits.

He will not get the max unless its a super desperate and highly mismanaged team. Why? Doctors pre-draft red flagged him for having serious future issues that will end his career.

Anyone who thinks a guy averaging 10 games per year deserves a max is delusional

Not a dime until he proves he can play a full season.

Last year he was incredibly babied. No back to backs, day offs, limited minutes. And he still only played like 31 games.

One risk is that if he does stay healthy and plays like he was last January he could qualify to get 30%Max instead of 25%Max.  He just needs to make one the All NBA teams which wouldn't be that hard with the weakness at the center position.

Not sure about the rules.  Could you tie the extension amount to number of minutes/games played (e.g. over 50 games is 25% of cap, under 50 games is 20% of cap)?
