good read

I just looked at this. It seems if it were as simple as giving away Rozier/Jackson/Mickey to the Jazz it would have been done already?

My only explanation is that they're trying really hard to swap the redundant Crowder for a serviceable big and keep Rozier.

(assuming we stash Yabu and dump Rozier-Jackson for future pick(s)/salary relief)

1. Horford $27,734,405
2. Bradley $8,808,989
3. Crowder $6,796,117
4. Thomas $6,261,394
5. Tatum $5,645,400
6. Brown $4,956,480
7. Smart $4,538,019
8. Zizic $1,645,200
9. rookie minimum $815,615
10. rookie minimum $815,615
11. rookie minimum $815,615
12. rookie minimum $815,615

Total : $69,648,464

The league set the salary cap for the upcoming campaign at $99,093,000.

$99,093,000 - $69,648,464 = $29,444,536 available in cap space

That's $283,364 short of Hayward's max ($29,727,900).

Is that it??? We should simply ask him to take a paycut... heck, hell make that back in endorsements his first week.
he took a $44 million pay cut to switch teams already. He owes us nothing more
He doesn't, but making the team trade rotation players for pennies on the dollars so that you can get an extra million after you've already given up twenty times that to go to the team of your choosing strikes me as odd if your idea was to sign with a team that can win games.

This is the correct answer. At least present him with the option. However he might want one of these guys like Crowder out of there and so he might not want to do that. He may feel that he'd rather have Brown coming off the bench for him than Crowder... Who knows. I can't imagine that if he wanted to keep them all that he wouldn't volunteer that.
We're not going to present Hayward with the option AT THIS POINT.  Talk about a bait and switch.  And I doubt he was presented with that offer when he was being recruited when he may well have chosen one of the other teams.

Common sense people.

Common sense says that Hayward and the Celtics probably talk enough so that both sides are aware of what's going on. If the snag was 300k, I'm sure Hayward could have volunteered to have them written off his salary.

Again, it's probably more complicated than that, or it would have been done long ago.

Nah man, I'm sure everyone here would be cool with it if they accepted a job offer and then the company asked them to take a pay cut on their first day.

What kind of awful person wouldn't give up a few thousand from their salary so that the company can match the offer Ron (or was it John? or Rob? Who knows, you've never met them) in Accounting got from that other company.  What are you, greedy and not a team player?

A company (or in this case, team) should never even put you in that position.  You don't offer the guy the full max and then come back and say that you don't want to (note: "don't want to", not "can't") make the moves necessary for that.  The team made their bed and now needs to sleep in it, it's not Hayward's responsibility.
I'm bitter.

The article is incorrect.  Bernardoni has followed up on Twitter saying that he was wrong.
