Explain me this: Paul agrees on a sign and trade: Clips get back a warchest of role players.

Gallinari agrees on a sign and trade: Denver gets 1 future second round pick.

What gives? Best answer gets 2 shiny TPs..

I agree that it is very strange that Denver would settle for a 2nd round pick which most of the time is just a throw away. I think it's because of the Millsap signing and money that they needed to move Gallo and with no other offers looming they let him go just like Indy let PG13 go for nothing.

Chris Paul was a weird situation. It wasn't a sign and trade, but essentially a rental. The Rockets get a year of CP3 on his current contract (which is much smaller than the max) and get his Bird Rights next year. With a sign and trade, they would get neither. From the Clippers' point of view it was essentially a sign and trade, but not from the Rocket's point of view, so the price was higher (plus they had to do a lot to match salaries before July 1st)

You're missing how those trades went.  Houston got rid of the salary they needed to in order to make the CP3 trade work, and since the Clippers were willing to take that on, they got some useful players and a pick.  Denver was not willing to take on salary for Gallo, so Atlanta is the team that got the pick for being willing to take on the matching salary.  Since Denver was only agreeing to do a favor by using Bird rights for a player they weren't resigning, they just got a 2nd.

On another note, the Gallo signing should solidify the Clips as a playoff team, but not a very good one. Hopefully a pick in the teens will convey in 2019 or 2020.
