Not that it matters much, but I do remember that in the 2014 free agency there were reports of Celtics first call at midnight being to gordon Hayward  to let him know they can't get him now but are interested in his profile...
Haven't seen anyone bring this back or refer to it so I'm not sure if I remember correctly...
Anyone here could confirm...?
If true it's yet another argument to prove him we have been valuing him as our priority for a while

I think it was to Isaiah Thomas. Or maybe that was Ainge's first call and Stevens' was another.

But he already signed an offer sheet with Charlotte a few years ago, so he wasn't afraid of leaving Utah.....

And this is Charlotte we are talking about.

If he is thinking at all Boston is an easy choice....

I've seen this said a lot about other cities, and I certainly get the hometown appeal, but objectively Boston is a pretty crappy place to live.  The winters are terrible, the taxes are high, there is a lot of sprawl, etc.  Charlotte, for example, is a growing thriving city that is a pretty nice place to live.

I was talking organization wise. C's are much closer to a championship.

When you are making multiple millions a year, Boston is a much better city to live in than Charlotte, or SLC.  Far more cultured, much better restaurants, much richer sports tradition, it is just the place to be.  From a team sports perspective, it is currently the center of the universe, with the greatest NFL franchise of the 21st century, one of the top 3 MLB franchises of the 21st Century, not to mention our beloved Celtics, who are on the cusp of returning to championship glory soon. The winters can be challenging, but these athletes are travelling half the time to other cities, and can go wherever they want in the summer during their time off. By the way, New England summers are way better than Charlotte, NC.

Really? I thought Brad Stevens was the first to call him that FA year.

Ainge was the one who called IT.

Of course it was mainly to gauge interest since at that time the C's had no cap space haha.

What a difference 2 years makes.

I don't remember if it was the first call or not, but they definitely talked.  The message was "you're going to get the max, and we can't give that to you this year, but we can't wait to talk to you about this again in a few seasons."

The groundwork for this signing has been laid for years.

Then Salt Lake sure, but not Charlotte.  Charlotte is a booming mecca.  Giant towers being built all over the place.  Lots of very high end downtown living, in addition to some very very wealthy suburbs.  Charlotte is a very appealing city to be in right now.

Basketball wise sure, Boston has a better team and a better history, but Charlotte isn't exactly a dreg of a team either.  If all goes well for them, I could see them being a top 4 team in the East and would be very surprised if they don't make the playoffs.

Ugh, every time I visit Charlotte I come back feeling so glad I don't live there.  It's a hideous sprawl.  It does have some pretty decent restaurants, but I find it so ugly.

Sounds so appealing. But you seem to be hype up anything that's NOT Boston.

Gene Nichol, a professor at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill who has studied race and poverty in Charlotte, said he believed the riots were not only a response to the police shooting but a consequence of growing inequalities in the city that have come with its transformation from a provincial capital to popular location for Fortune 500 companies and skilled workers from across the East Coast and South.

“The city’s poverty rate has almost doubled since 2000. The income disparity is potent,” Nichol said. “About 70% of black households make under $60,000 a year, while almost 60% of white ones make more than that. The median income for white families is 86% higher than blacks and Hispanics.

“The poverty is concentrated and racialized. Charlotte has had probably the fastest rising concentrated poverty rate among major American cities.”

Earning $30 million per year certainly mitigates a lot of the weather issues that us normal people have to endure.  You don't have to shovel, you've got a garage, you could hire drivers to drive you door-to-door to avoid getting cold if you want, and paying to keep the house a warm 70-75 degrees all day isn't an issue.

Moranis, I don't think you understand the meaning of the word 'sprawl' if you say that Boston is one and Charlotte is not.

I lived in New England for 29 years before moving to Florida, but leave every summer, not just because of the heat, but so that I can take advantage of the wonderful northeastern cities and their incredible walkability. This is not to say there aren't a lot of great things happening outside of the northeast - I would never move back to Boston full-time - but, man oh man, Charlotte one day dreams of being Boston in terms of culture, economics, education, sports, etc.

Amen to that. Yes we called Heyward and we have a shot. I think it is better than we did with KD. If we miss sign some one year high contracts and go from there.

Lived in Charlotte all my life. It's a great place to live but a little too humid in July and August. Been to Boston before too and it's my favorite city to visit. Both have things over the other and both have bad points too. Now Salt Lake City is a place I never want to visit again.
